UNESCO, thank you for the partnership we build in terms of changing the educational system in our country.
Investment in education is about the future. One of the reasons why we do not have sufficient investment in education across the board is because politicians think of short-term education on the expenses of long term.
When you have the discrepancy between the motives of politicians and the motives of future generation and the future world, there is such a big gap.
We, in Ethiopia, the new Government, we have decided that we cannot simply sit and wait for the rest of the world to do what is important for our country, for our future and our children’s future.
By comparison, with many other African countries, we have already spent 20% of our budget on educational related activities.
This year, because we knew that it is not enough, because on one hand the government does not have enough budget, and on the other hand the need is so humongous, we have started a major campaign to improve the educational system in general, for the public to take the responsibility of improving the infrastructure of education.
According to the Ethiopian Ministry of Education only 1% of the schools satisfy the basic minimum requirement of what schools need to have whether: it is a clean environment, water, electricity, wash facilities for women, which has a significant effect on girls’ education. School feeding: a very important issue in making sure that, equitably, kids in any country, particularly in our country have a decent chance to be able to be educated in respective of their economic background.
As a country, we have been spending decent amount of money in relation to our budget, for education but we have been investing on expansion and that have significantly come at the cost of the quality of education. So, we have been re-imagining, our educational system, so that on one hand, we will continue to expand education, on the other hand we will concentrate on the quality of education, so that our children will have a fighting chance to this emerging and extremely challenging world. And the only way we can address, as a country or as a continent is by significantly invest in education.
