๐ŸŽ‰ You're invited - Monday's Student Showcase!

This month, our students in the Medaf Math Accelerator Program have been playing, exploring, and building real confidence in math and now it's time to celebrate what they've achieved.

Session 1 | Before We Teach, We First Understand.

The first session of the Medaf Math Accelerator began with smiles, games, and activities that helped our students get comfortable, meet new friends, and start their learning journey with positive energy.

Then we began our baseline mathematics assessment.

Rather than assuming that a child's grade tells us their actual mathematics level, we took the time to understand what each student already knows, how they think, and where they may need further support.

The assessment is not about labeling students. It is about understanding them.

This gives us a starting point to identify their mathematical strengths and learning gaps and better guide their learning throughout the program.

We believe every child learns differently.

Before we teach, we first understand.

The journey has begun.

The Journey Has Begun: Medaf Math Accelerator

This week, we officially launched the Medaf Math Accelerator with a parent orientation session organized by Medaf Academy in collaboration with Col. John C. Robinson American Corner.

The American Corner team welcomed everyone and shared their mission of creating opportunities for learning, innovation, and community engagement. ๐Ÿ™Œ

Instead of a one-way presentation, we made it a conversation. We asked parents and students a simple question:

"Which subject do students find most difficult, and why?"

Different views came up, but most agreed on one thing โ€” math is one of the toughest subjects. Parents and students pointed to teaching approaches, weak conceptual understanding, and low confidence as the biggest challenges.

So we went a step deeper:

"Why do so many students struggle with mathematics?"

The answer we kept coming back to: math becomes meaningful when students can connect it to real life, think critically, and actually engage not just memorize steps.

Parents and students shared real experiences, asked great questions, and talked about how we can build a more supportive learning environment together. One point we kept coming back to: real progress comes from consistent effort, not last-minute cramming.

This orientation was just the beginning. Over the next month, we're partnering with families to help students build stronger math thinking, more confidence, and a lasting love for learning.

We're excited for what's ahead!

Quick one for parents ๐Ÿ‘‹

Can your child tell you the difference between a whole number and a natural number?

Most Grade 6โ€“8 students can't not because they're behind, but because no one ever laid it out visually for them.

We made this simple breakdown so you don't need
a math background to help. ๐Ÿ“Š

Try this tonight: Show your child the image and ask โ€” "Is -3 a whole number? Is it natural?"

Then drop their answer in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡ We'll tell you if they got it right!

Imagine starting school in a language you can't read.

That was Maryamawit's reality.

Born and raised in the U.S., she moved to Ethiopia and joined a school where Amharic was the language of instruction.

She could speak a little Amharic at home, but she couldn't recognize a single Amharic letter.

When Maryamawit joined Medaf Academy, we didn't start with the Grade 4 curriculum.

We started with where she actually was.

After assessing her learning level and providing personalized support

๐Ÿ“š After 2 months
โœ… Recognized all Amharic letters
โœ… Formed simple words
โœ… Began reading

๐Ÿ“š After 5 months
โœ… Read and understood passages
โœ… Constructed sentences correctly
โœ… Communicated confidently in Amharic

Maryamawit's journey reminds us of something important

Students learn best when we teach them at their learning level not just their grade level.

Tomorrow we'll be at ICE Connect! ๐Ÿ™Œ

Come find us if you're passionate about rethinking how students learn. We'd love to talk about why we believe assessment should come before teaching and what that looks like in practice.

๐Ÿšซ One mistake most education platforms make

They design for themselves, not for the learner.

Before anything else, this mindset came early for us from our mentor, Dagmawi Bedlu

๐Ÿ‘‰ โ€œThe user sets the value. Build for them, not for yourself.โ€

During the Reach for Change Ethiopia immersion week, this idea became even clearer.

We were reminded of something simple but powerful
๐Ÿ‘‰ The user is not us.

If we donโ€™t understand:
โ€ข how students think
โ€ข what they struggle with
โ€ข what they feel while learning

then we are just guessing and guessing does not build effective learning.

At Medaf Academy, we are shifting toward a more human-centered approach.

We design learning experiences based on how students actually learn and interact, not how we assume they do.

Because if it doesnโ€™t work for the learner, it doesnโ€™t work at all.

Grateful to mentors like Dagmawi Bedlu for grounding us early in this mindset, and to the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship and Reach for Change Ethiopia for reinforcing it through real experience.

Medaf Academy has been selected for Cohort 3 of the Mastercard EdTech Fellowship.

Our journey through the Mastercard Foundation Edtech Fellowship.

We are Grateful to be learning and growing through the Reach for Change Ethiopia Immersion Week.

The sessions and connections are already reshaping how we think about scaling impact and building better learning solutions at Medaf Academy.

Special thanks to the Reach for Change Ethiopia team for designing and delivering this fellowship experience and bringing together such a valuable community.

Deep appreciation to Bedilu Degefe, Tilahun, Mekuria Hailu, DTM, for the guidance and practical insights throughout the journey.

Building on the foundation from Accelerator, this journey continues to evolve.
