BISHOFTU, Ethiopia (March 30, 2026) – A major milestone has been achieved in Ethiopia’s digital health transformation journey with the official launch of the Data Science for Healthcare Certification Program – First Cohort Training (March–August 2026).

✨Building on one year of rigorous curriculum design and module validation, the program has now successfully transitioned from planning to implementation. The initiative is led by the Federal Ministry of Health (MoH), with technical and financial support from JSI, and implemented by Emerald.

The program brought together leaders from the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, regional health bureaus, and national agencies, enhancing their capacity to analyze and use health data for evidence-based decision-making.

This achievement reflects the strong partnership between Emerald, the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, and JSI, marking an important step toward building a stronger, data-driven health system in Ethiopia.

Launch of the Data Leadership Program to Strengthen Data-Driven Leadership in Ethiopia’s Health Sector

Bishoftu, Ethiopia, March 9, 2026: The first round of training under the Data Leadership Program (DLP) officially commenced on March 9, 2026, marking a major step toward strengthening data literacy and promoting data-driven leadership in Ethiopia’s health sector.

Implemented since January 1, 2025, through the Support of JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., the program aims to strengthen the capacity of health sector leaders to interpret, analyze, and use data for strategic decision-making and improved health system performance.

Over the past year, the project team conducted gap assessments, landscape analysis, and developed targeted training modules, which were reviewed and endorsed through the national Continuing Professional Development (CPD) system. Following this endorsement, the first round of training brought together leaders from the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health, regional health bureaus, and national agencies. The program will be delivered in four rounds to expand participation and strengthen institutional capacity across the country.

During the opening session, Hiwot Belay, Senior Advisor at JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., highlighted the importance of strengthening leaders’ ability to translate data into actionable insights for effective decision-making.

The milestone reflects strong collaboration among partners. Emerald expressed appreciation to the leadership of the Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health particularly the Strategic Affairs Leadership and the Human Resource Development Directorate as well as to JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. for its continued technical, financial, and leadership support.

The Data Leadership Program contributes to building a culture of data use, evidence-based leadership, and digital transformation for a stronger and more resilient health system in Ethiopia.

BISHOFTU, Ethiopia (Feb. 12-2026) – Building on the successful validation of the Data Science for Healthcare Certification Program Curriculum in November 2025, stakeholders reconvened this week for the Module Validation Workshop, marking another key milestone toward program implementation.

Organized by the Federal Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with Emerald International College and JSI, the ongoing sessions bring together national health experts, data scientists, academic leaders, and public health practitioners to conduct a detailed review of each training module. The objective is to ensure technical accuracy, contextual relevance to Ethiopia’s health system, and alignment with national digital health and workforce development priorities.

Since Feb. 11, participants have been engaged in intensive technical discussions, refining learning outcomes, practical components, assessment methods, and delivery approaches for the program’s modules. This process is designed to guarantee that each module equips future trainees with practical data science competencies needed to strengthen evidence-based decision-making across Ethiopia’s healthcare sector.

The module validation exercise represents the final technical step before pilot implementation, reaffirming partners’ shared commitment to developing a skilled healthcare data science workforce and advancing a modern, data-driven health system for Ethiopia.
