Paradise Papers, tax havens and paraísos fiscales

So we are seeing a lot in the news about the Paradise Papers. I have no interesting information about the workings of these tax havens but being a language geek I thought it was interesting to comment on what must be one of the most interesting and most topical mistranslations. The term "paraísos fiscales" entered the Spanish language as a direct translation of the French term "paradis fiscaux". However this was in fact a mistranslation of the English term "tax havens". Haven in English despite being similar to the word "heaven" meaning "cielo" o "paraíso" actually means "puerto" o "refugio"and these should more correctly be called in Spanish "refugios fiscales". Seemingly they are called the Paradise Papers in reference to the mistranslation in Spanish and French which is amusing (if you are a language geek like myself).

Make sure your corporate image is not being mistranslated or misconstrued.

En los países de habla inglesa, cuando se pregunta qué es el factor más importante al buscar una vivienda o un comercio, se suele decir qué hay tres elementos muy importantes:

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION!

(¡UBICACIÓN UBICACIÓN UBICACIÓN!)

enfatizando claramente que es lo más importante encima de todos los demás factores.

Igualmente, yo diría que para escribir bien en un inglés correcto un aspecto que a menudo se infravalora o se ignora completamente, y que es importantisíma, es el uso correcto de lo que en inglés se conocen como collocations. De hecho, cuando los españoles escriben en inglés lo que más les falla son las collocations. Una collocation es p.ej. combinar el verbo correcto con el sustantivo correcto. Un ejemplo sencillo basado en lo que puede llegar a ser una pequeña pesadilla para los que no son nativos. Make or Do? Los dos verbos significan hacer en castellano. Pero hacer negocios se dice to do business, hacer dinero (en el sentido de obtener beneficios) se dice to make money.

Otro ejemplo menos sencillo; cumplir con los requisitos o las condiciones se dice en inglés to meet requirements. El problema es se tiende mucho a traducir (cubriré este aspecto en otra publicación) y los españoles tienden a asociar el verb to meet, ¡correctamente claro!, con el significado de reunir o quedar con alguien. Entonces, difícilmente se va a usar el verbo to meet para traducir el verbo cumplir.

Pero, tranquilo! No hay problemas, solo soluciones.

Es cierto es difícil escribir en una lengua extranjera y el mundo de negocios nos pide cada vez más dominio de otras lenguas. Pero en este caso hay una solución. Para consultar si un verbo se suele usar con un sustantivo, una herramienta gratis y muy útil es el sitio web: www.ozdic.com Aquí al introducir una palabra, te da todas las posibles collocations. Es un truco que suelo usar para traducciones para asegurar que suena bien la frase y para controlar la calidad final del documento en inglés.

Girls or Women? The thorny issue of how to use language.

In English we have many fairly neutral words for men like bloke, fella, lad (UK) and guy, dude, bro (US). The words boys is not so often used as it suggests a male child who has not yet reached adulthood. Often women are called girls and some see this as inappropriate in that "girls" is more correctly used to denominate female children rather than adults. "Girls" might be faithfully translated into Spanish as "niñas" not "chicas". Funnily, in Spanish "chicos" and "chicas" is often used for both sexes irrelevant of age, sometimes even for older people and few seem to take offence. However, it would be rather strange to call your mother a girl in English for example.
