Now in its fourth year, the 4Voices Public Speaking Competition for Teenagers is an inspiring event where the power of young voices takes centre stage. This year’s theme, ‘It’s up to me to…’, challenges participants to reflect on their unique potential to create change, take responsibility and make an impact in their own way.

Teenagers in 4ESO and 1BXT across Spain are invited to submit a 60 to 90-second video in English, sharing a glimpse of their ideas for a speech based on this theme. From these submissions, 24 individuals will be selected to join a transformative, day-long bootcamp at No20, a coworking space in Vilassar de Mar (Barcelona).

At the bootcamp, they will learn essential skills for crafting and delivering compelling speeches, guided by our experienced public speakers and mentors, Cormac Walsh and Gabriella Opaz. From the bootcamp participants, 12 finalists will be chosen to showcase their talents in the grand final, which will take place at CosmoCaixa in Barcelona on 6 April 2025.

This competition is a celebration of ideas, growth and the courage to stand up and speak out.

Pati Sagarra Novo, one of our amazing speakers from last year's 4Voices event in Barcelona, shares her thoughts on the 4Voices upcoming Public Speaking Bootcamp to be held on 30 November and 1 December, where students aged 14 to 18 years can gain valuable life skills for the future by learning to confidently use their voice. Salma encourages us to connect, care and retain our compassion despite powerful Internet trends.

Is the lack of language diversity online accelerating language death or simply reflecting what's happening in the offline world?

Arnau invites youth to save the non dominant languages on the Internet, by breathing life into their cultural heritage with every post and video. By sharing their stories, traditions and experiences in their native tongues, they can challenge the dominance of major languages online and make their voices heard. Imagine a world where every scroll reveals a tapestry of languages, each telling its own unique story. By collaborating with friends worldwide on multilingual projects and pushing for language preservation apps, youth can turn the tide. This isn't just about saving words, it's about preserving identities, histories and the very essence of who we are.

What does your Instagram accent say about you as a person?

"The reason we have problems with performance on social media with Instagram accents and the fakeness we see is because you can actually recognise it."

Teens often see an ‘Instagram accent’ as the perfect way to look and act online, pushing them to feel a need to alter themselves to fit in. This constant pressure often nurtures a sense of inadequacy and disconnect from who they truly are. A study found that 70% of teens feel worse about their appearance because of social media. Should teens try to change this fake accent and embrace their true selves, or just accept it as an illusion with no real value? The struggle is real - choosing between the lure of perfection and the truth of their own worth.

Has our fear of being alone clouded our ability to differentiate between a toxic and healthy relationship?

Technology has created toxic relationships among teens by fostering relentless comparison, cyberbullying and superficial connections. According to a global study by UNICEF, one in three young people have experienced cyberbullying. The pressure to appear perfect online often makes teens feel inadequate and isolated, turning friendships into numbers of likes and followers. The digital age can frequently distort their self-worth and erode the trust and empathy needed for healthy relationships, leaving teens more connected but deeply disconnected.

How might my unconscious habit of sharing personal drama online affect the mental and emotional stability of those who follow me?

"We can perceive our emotions like a cup. Each one of us has a cup inside but we all have an end point. Therefore, we all have a limit of emotions we can take. And sometimes it just takes one extra drop for the cup to overflow."

In the digital age, young people often find a sense of belonging when sharing their struggles online, hoping for empathy and connection. However, the constant flood of trauma dumping can overwhelm and burden their peers, who silently shoulder the emotional weight of their peers. This unintentional ripple effect can lead to anxiety, emotional fatigue and a sense of helplessness, as they navigate the delicate balance between offering support and protecting their own mental health. As we navigate this complex online world, it's crucial to recognise the impact of our words and seek healthier ways to cope, ensuring we lift each other up rather than inadvertently dragging each other down.
