April 2014, when I completed my training as a facilitator under the guidance of the wonderful and the team at Strategos Desarrollo y Gestión at the Nueva Esparta State Chamber of Commerce in Porlamar, Margarita Island, Venezuela 🇻🇪

This training was very important to me, as it gave me many of the tools I use today with my students, as well as the methods for conveying the information and knowledge I generate through my courses and tutoring sessions. It was a very enjoyable experience during the training 😉.

“I CAN'T FIND MY WAY AROUND”
Sometimes we arrive at a new place—or even move to a new city—and have a hard time finding our way around. Figuring out the right direction can be a nightmare or a headache.

One of the most useful ways to find your bearings is to use a landmark. This is usually a distinctive building, a tower, or a monument. Other times, it might be a natural feature, such as a mountain, a lake, or the sea.

From there, you can start building a network that helps you navigate the new area, using other sub-landmarks like a familiar store, a traffic light, where you bought something to eat, or where traffic converges.

Another effective method is to observe the patterns of the city’s residents. People generally head toward and gather at key hubs in a city, such as the downtown area, a park, or a religious building.

We can also orient ourselves using the direction of the wind and the movement of the clouds, as well as the direction of the sunset. This is for the more observant among us.

COLLECTING DATA WITH A GPS 🛰

Sometimes, when we undertake a project of any kind (professional, academic, or otherwise), we need to collect our own data.

To do this, we have tools that allow us to record points in space: GPS (Global Positioning System) devices, which come in a wide variety of models, scales, and features.

Generally, GPS navigators (such as those shown in the illustrations) are the most common on the market and allow us to collect data points with moderate accuracy, with an error margin of a few meters.

There are differential GPS devices, which have an accuracy that can be as high as just a few millimeters.

The choice or availability of one type of equipment over another will also depend on the scale at which we wish to work. Certain attributes can tolerate the margin of error in GPS navigators, but others cannot and will require a more precise GPS.

Do people always ask you, “Do you use GIS?” “What GIS software do you work with?” “I use such-and-such GIS.” Well, folks, that's a mistake.

A GIS isn’t just software. It’s something more complex that involves data, software, people, methodologies, and equipment. If we’re going to mention the program we usually work with, we should refer to it as “GIS software.”

With a GIS (which is actually a complex tool), we can identify trends within a territory or geographic area. We can also identify behavioral patterns, which allows us to take action and develop proposals. Additionally, with a GIS, we model reality to manage the territory and find the most effective, sustainable way to utilize a geographic space.

GEOGRAPHY NEVER STOPS 🗺🌍🛰

“Geography never stops” is a statement that reflects the idea that the world never stands still, and that our understanding of geography continues to advance as we explore and learn more and more about our planet and its complexity.

Although geography is a discipline that has been studied for centuries, there is still much to discover and explore. With advances in technology, we have access to tools that allow us to better understand the world around us, from geographic information systems to Earth observation satellites.

Furthermore, geography focuses not only on the exploration and understanding of the natural world, but also on the people and societies that inhabit it. Understanding how cultures, economies, and politics interact with the environment is crucial for addressing the global challenges we face today, such as climate change, poverty, and inequality.

Therefore, the statement “geography never rests” reflects the need to continue advancing our geographical knowledge to address the global challenges we face. The world keeps moving forward, and geography is a discipline that adapts and evolves to help us understand and solve the challenges we face.

I also received technical training and recognition, particularly at the Miranda State Civil Protection Academy 🇻🇪

I was part of an excellent team alongside outstanding professionals trained in the fields of Geology, Risk Management, and Disaster Management.

Many of us take geography and its representation quite far—in our daily lives and even in our personal belongings 😬

It’s no surprise to find decorations and all kinds of figures inspired by world maps, old maps, nautical charts, and globes. It’s part of how we identify with our geographical space.
