Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems are cogeneration systems. They produce electricity and allow the use of part of the heat generated that would otherwise be lost as waste.
The approach of this work is to implement advanced control to improve the overall energy management of the system.
Model-based predictive control has been used to optimize performance and is combined with basic low-level control to match optimal strategies with real-time control.
The management system (based on predictive control) that the micro-CHP system will use will be in charge of deciding at each moment when to turn on the battery, at what power, what amount of energy will be bought from the Network, what amount of energy will be used to charge the battery or what amount has to be discharged from the battery etc., in order to cover the electrical and thermal demand of the user.

In this paper, we present a model of the cooling system of a PEMFC-based μ-CHP system, which is oriented to the design of the temperature control of the stack. The model has been developed from a μ-CHP system located in the laboratory of our research team, the predictive control and heuristic optimization group (CPOH).
