Why Every Pilates Class Should Teach Awareness First, Strength Second - Anita Horry Academy 03/06/2026

Most Pilates classes focus on strength first. More reps, more effort, more burn.

But what if that’s not where real progress begins?

When clients learn to truly feel how they move, everything changes. They stop guessing. They stop compensating. They start understanding their own bodies in a deeper, more intelligent way.
Strength built without awareness can reinforce old patterns. But strength built with awareness becomes controlled, efficient, and sustainable.

This is where real transformation happens in Pilates teaching.
If you’re a Pilates teacher who wants to go beyond exercise and start truly educating movement, this is for you.

Why Every Pilates Class Should Teach Awareness First, Strength Second - Anita Horry Academy Introduction In Pilates, it’s easy to get caught up in strength, intensity, and visible results. Clients often come in wanting a stronger core, toned muscles, or better endurance. But beneath all of that, there is something far more important that determines whether those results are sustainable o...

As clients progress, it can be tempting to focus only on more advanced exercises. But the fundamentals are what create better alignment, cleaner movement patterns, and long-term progress.

Simple movements done with precision often reveal more about the body than complex exercises ever could. They help clients build control, improve coordination, and create a stronger connection to how they move.

The basics are not just for beginners. They are essential at every level of practice.
Strong foundations create stronger movement.

MYTH or FACT?

“Being fully booked means you are successful.”

Myth ❌

Being fully booked can look like success from the outside, but it does not always reflect the full picture. Some teachers are constantly busy but feel exhausted, overwhelmed, and unable to maintain the quality of teaching they truly want to provide.

In fact, being fully booked can sometimes be a sign that it may be time to reassess your pricing. High demand often means people value what you offer and that you are good at what you do. But it can also mean your services are too accessible for the level of demand you are carrying. If your schedule is consistently maxed out, increasing your prices may help create a more sustainable workload, protect your energy, and support the quality of your teaching.

Success is not only about having a packed schedule. It is also about sustainability, client impact, personal growth, and creating a career that supports your well-being too.

A teacher with fewer sessions but strong client relationships, balanced energy, and consistent results can be just as successful as someone teaching all day.

Being busy is not the only goal. Teaching with purpose, maintaining quality, valuing your work, and enjoying what you do matter just as much.

In both Pilates teaching and business, consistency is what builds trust, confidence, and long-term growth. The small actions you repeat daily eventually become part of your professional identity.

The way you communicate with clients, the quality of your teaching, the structure of your systems, and the standards you maintain all influence the experience people associate with your work.

Success is rarely built through occasional effort. It is built through repeated habits practiced with intention over time.

If you want stronger results, stronger systems, or stronger teaching, start by looking at what you consistently repeat every day.

REDEFINING PILATES

Returning to the True Meaning of Contrology

Somewhere along the way, Pilates became associated with flat stomachs, aesthetic movement, and boutique fitness culture.

But that was never the true intention behind the method Joseph Pilates created.

Before it was called “Pilates,” Joseph Pilates named his work Contrology — the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.

It was never designed as exercise alone.
It was designed as a system for living.

In his original writings, Return to Life Through Contrology and Your Health, Joseph Pilates spoke extensively about posture, breath, circulation, spinal health, vitality, mental wellbeing, and the impact modern lifestyles were having on the human body.

He believed poor movement habits, shallow breathing, stress, and physical disconnection were contributing to both mental and physical decline.

His method was created to restore people back to balance.

Not through punishment.
Not through exhaustion.

But through conscious movement, precision, control, breath, and awareness.

Joseph Pilates wrote:
“Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.”

He also stated that his method:
“Develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”

This philosophy changes everything about how we understand Pilates today.

True Pilates is not about shrinking the body.

It is about understanding the body.
It is not about aesthetics over function.
It is about creating strength that supports longevity, freedom of movement, nervous system regulation, and overall wellbeing.

At Anita Horry Academy, we believe it is time to return to the original essence of Pilates.

Movement that heals instead of punishes.

Strength rooted in intelligence and awareness.

A practice that supports the whole human being, not just physical appearance.

Pilates was never meant to be performative.

It was meant to help people return home to themselves.

And perhaps now more than ever, that original message matters.

As a Pilates teacher, it is easy to let your own practice become the first thing you sacrifice. Client sessions, admin work, planning, messaging, and studio responsibilities can quickly fill the entire day.

But your personal practice is not separate from your profession. It is what keeps your teaching grounded, embodied, and clear. When you move your own body, you remember what it feels like to be a client, not just an instructor.

Your practice is where you refine your understanding, reset your nervous system, and reconnect with the principles you teach others. It is not a luxury. It is part of your professional foundation.

Even with everything waiting on your phone, choosing to step onto the mat is still part of showing up for your work in a deeper way.

💬 Do you still prioritize your own Pilates practice as a teacher, or has it become the first thing you skip? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Why Reformer-Only Studios Are Missing the Point - Anita Horry Academy 29/05/2026

Reformer Pilates is powerful, but is it the full picture of Pilates?

Many studios today are built around Reformer-only classes, driven by demand, trends, and fast growth. But as the industry evolves, an important question is emerging: are we simplifying Pilates too much?
Pilates is a complete movement system that goes beyond one machine.

In this blog, we explore why Reformer-only studios may be missing the deeper method behind Pilates and what this means for teaching quality, client results, and long-term studio growth.

Why Reformer-Only Studios Are Missing the Point - Anita Horry Academy Introduction Reformer Pilates has become one of the strongest drivers of studio growth in today’s movement industry. It is engaging, visually appealing, and highly effective for developing strength, coordination, and control, which is why many studios have built their entire business model around ...

A confused client is not a difficult client.

They need clearer cues, better pacing, or simpler progressions that break the movement down into manageable steps and allow them to build understanding without feeling overwhelmed.

Confusion in movement often comes from too much information, too many corrections at once, or progressions that move faster than the client’s current level of control. It is not a reflection of effort or attitude, but of how the instruction is delivered.
When a client feels lost, the solution is not to push harder. It is to slow the process down, simplify the language, and rebuild clarity step by step.

Effective teaching meets the client where they are, not where the exercise expects them to be. When understanding improves, confidence grows, and movement becomes more controlled and intentional.

💬 Have you experienced a moment where simplifying your cueing completely changed a client’s understanding? Share your experience in the comments or message me if you want practical cueing strategies for clearer teaching.
