🌊 As the Ocean Sciences Meeting came to a close, we would like to thank all those who attended and followed our research on respiration in the mesopelagic ocean, aerosol deposition in the ocean, and physical-biological interactions at meso- and submesoscales.

Participating in the National Meeting of UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks in Spain

Themed "Knowledge/Action/Territory", representatives of the UNESCO Chairs from Spanish universities joined to discuss the challenges of higher education, the impact of the knowledge generated by the Chairs on aspects such as the (particularity on ), and the need to continue building synergies.

Our professor, Javier Arístegui, who holds the only chair focused on the ocean in the country, delivered a highly regarded presentation that stimulated reflection and participation from the attendees.

🔬 During the past couple of weeks, we had the pleasure of hosting Yixue Zhang, a postdoctoral researcher from the group of Prof. Wu Ying at the State Key Laboratory of Estuarine and Coastal Research (SKLEC), East China Normal University, in Shanghai, China.

Yixue is mentored by Javier Arístegui through the SCOR Working Group ReMO mentoring program. She visited our laboratory to learn methods for analyzing marine plankton community respiration - specifically through enzymatic activity measurements - using samples collected during oceanographic cruises carried out between September and December 2023 in the Indian Ocean.

🧪 Her work will contribute to a better understanding of the functioning and metabolic state of the Indian Ocean. 🌊

*Removing carbon dioxide through mesocosm study on the east of Gran Canaria*

Over the past month and a half, our PhD student Jana Piñel and Erasmus visiting students Lilly-Mo Kuhn and Judith Zelenka, joined our fellow colleagues from and to assess the impact of ocean alkalinity enhancement ( ) on microbial plankton communities and production.
It is now time to gather the different pieces of the puzzle to understand the side-effects of dissolving alkaline minerals in the oligotrophic waters east of Gran Canaria and determine the safety of such strategy to mitigate rising atmospheric CO2 levels.

Nuestro grupo participó con entusiasmo en la carpa del Instituto de Oceanografia y Cambio Global de la , compartiendo con el público nuestra pasión por el océano y las ciencias del mar 🌊🌍

Agradecemos a todas las personas que se acercaron, y se interesaron por nuestro trabajo. Fue una gran oportunidad para divulgar lo que hacemos, responder preguntas y conectar con otras iniciativas que también trabajan por el conocimiento y la conservación del medio marino.

Today is a great day! 🥂

Ianna Luna, from the Marine Sciences bachelor degree, has successfully defended her undergrad thesis. She has obtained an outstanding score and has been nominated for honors. We couldn't be prouder! ✨️💯

We've witnessed her hard work and effort through these months. Congratulations! May this be the first of many more milestones.

Ianna was supervised by Dr. Javier Arístegui and PhD. student Laura Marín. Her work, titled "Determining the biological response of a coastal phytoplankton community to air-equilibrated alkalinity enhancement," assessed the community's reaction to this ocean-based Negative Emission Technology (NET), through microcosm experiment designed for her thesis.

Additionally, Ianna obtained a scientific collaboration scholarship for the development of her thesis from the Ministry of Education, Professional Formation and Sports!

Participation in ISMS'2024! 🌊

The International Symposium on Marine Sciences 9th edition ends today in Valencia. An important scientific hub at the national level, ISMS serves as a key congregator of scientists all around Spain, promoted by the Conference of Marine Sciences Dean's, and of course, the University to which they belong. As part of , Aja Trebec shared part of her work for her PhD "Nutrient limitation and source dependency of marine plankton in the offshore Canary Waters".

Farewell, Vida! (For now) 🩵

For the past six months, we have had the privilege of working alongside Vida Burić, an MS graduate from Croatia who joined us for her Erasmus+ Traineeship. Vida's dedication and eagerness to learn have made her an invaluable member of our team. Her hard work and collaborative spirit have truly enriched our lab.
