Urra Field Meeting 2020
24th - 27th May

Celebrating the 30th anniversary of teaching and research in the SSSIs of Almería SE Spain.

There will be four days of local fieldtrips and supporting lectures by experts in geology, geography, geomorphology, paleontology and enviromental studies. The programme will also include presentation of new work by researchers in the region (abstract submission details to be announced).

We hope to see many old friends who have stayed in Urra over the years. They will see many improvements to the buildings but Shady Grove is unchanged. People new to the area will have a wonderful opportunity to learn from the people who wrote their text books.

A field meeting to showcase the spectacular geology, landscape and environmental issues of the Almeria region, SE Spain. This area is one of the most widely visited regions for field teaching and research in Europe. We invite Graduate students/lecturers/professors to meet and discuss the experience that the region has to offer.

Excursions led by University professors, e.g. Roy Alexander, Juan Carlos Braga, Jose María Calaforra, Adolfo Calvo, Anne Mather, Ernie Rutter and Dr Martin Stokes, who is also the person to contact by anyone wanting to offer to lead a day or half-day.

Geology ---> Basin fills, Miocene turbidites + Messinian carbonates/gypsum.

--->Structural and Metamorphic geology, geophysics, faulting and the evolution of the sedimentary basins,

relationships to upper Miocene magmatism and regional geodynamics.

Geomorphology ---> badlands + gypsum karst + river capture + landslides.

Environmental issues ---> water + plastic + energy + agriculture.

The details of the programme are yet to be finalized. If you wish to contribute please contact Martin at Plymouth asap and we will be delighted to include you.
