When a person living with dementia says something that isn’t accurate, correcting them repeatedly may create fear, embarrassment, or frustration. Their brain may no longer be able to process the facts the way yours does.
Instead of arguing:
• Listen for the feeling behind the words.
• Acknowledge what they’re experiencing.
• Offer reassurance.
• Redirect the conversation when needed.
If your loved one says, “I need to go home,” instead of responding, “You are home,” try:
“You’re missing home. Tell me what you love most about it.”
The goal isn’t to prove who is right. The goal is to help the person feel heard, safe, and respected. We cannot ask the person living with dementia to change how their brain is working. We can learn to change how we respond. Dementia Forward helps families and professional care partners build stronger, more compassionate connections throughout the dementia journey.
