Dementia may have a name, but every person’s experience is different.
A diagnosis can help us understand what may be happening, but it doesn’t tell us everything about the person living with dementia. Their history, personality, routines, environment, abilities, preferences, and needs all matter.

Instead of asking, “What should I do for someone with this type of dementia?” try asking, “What does this person need from me right now?”
That’s where meaningful support begins. 💙

You don’t have to correct every detail. 💙

When someone living with dementia remembers something differently than you do, our first instinct may be to correct them.

But ask yourself: Does being right matter right now?

Instead of correcting, try connecting.

If they say they need to get home to their parents, rather than saying, “Your parents passed away years ago,” try:

“What do you miss most about home?”

That small shift can turn confusion or frustration into a moment of comfort and connection.

With dementia, sometimes the kindest response isn’t about getting the facts right. It’s about meeting the person where they are.

Connection first. Correction only when it truly matters.

Did you know? Dementia isn’t just one specific disease. The word dementia is an umbrella term for a group of symptoms that affect memory, thinking, communication, and the ability to manage everyday life.

Alzheimer’s disease may be the one most people recognize, but there are many different types and causes of dementia, and each person’s experience can look different.

Understanding those differences can help families and care partners better understand what their loved one is experiencing and how to support them.
