WEAVE Reveals Secrets of Interstellar Comet 3I/Atlas. Using the WEAVE instrument on the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), astronomers from Northumbria and Edinburgh universities in the UK have uncovered new clues about interstellar comet 3I/Atlas. Their findings, supported by Director's Discretionary Time (DDT), reveal that the comet formed in extremely cold conditions, far from any star. More: https://www.ing.iac.es/PR/press/3IAtlas.html

Solar Eclipse August 12, 2026 from the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory. The total solar eclipse on the 12th of August, 2026 was seen as a partial eclipse from La Palma. This video by Jure Skvarč (ING) shows the lunar transit over the Sun, imaged using a ZWO ASI585MM camera on a Skywatcher Heliostar 76A H-alpha telescope and AZEQ-6 mount. A custom Python script was used to take care of alignment, stacking, sharpening, colorisation and movie creation. The entire transit was recorded. A few minutes after the end of the eclipse, the Sun set, making an interesting final movie effect. https://www.ing.iac.es/PR/press/solareclipse.html

The first results of the BEARD project explain the survival of our Galaxy. The international BEARD project, led from the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) and the University of La Laguna (ULL), has used data from several telescopes at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, including the Isaac Newton Telescope, and computer simulations to explain how galaxies similar to the Milky Way have managed to survive the most violent stages of the history of the Universe. WEAVE Observations Reveal Shock-Driven Emission in Jellyfish Tails. The Coma Legacy IFU Survey (CLIFS), led by Dr. Ian Roberts at the University of Waterloo (Canada), will observe all 29 star-forming galaxies in the Coma Cluster with radio continuum tails, along with a comparison sample of "normal" star-forming galaxies using the WEAVE Large-IFU mode. The CLIFS team takes advantage of the wide spectral range and large field of view provided by WEAVE to determine spatially-resolved emission-line diagnostics and gas kinematics for the stripped material. They find that the stripped gas in the jellyfish tails is excited by shocks driven by ram pressure. This work is just one piece of the broader CLIFS effort. The complete sample will allow the team to fully constrain the fraction of radio tails with active star formation in Coma, as well as spatially resolve star-formation histories across stripped galaxy disks. STUDENTSHIP PROGRAMME AT THE ISAAC NEWTON GROUP OF TELESCOPES

We welcome applications for four places on the ING studentship
programme 2026/27.

The deadline for applications is:

Sunday 29th March 2026

Details of the programme can be found on:

https://www.ing.iac.es/astronomy/science/studentship.html

The programme provides a unique opportunity for PhD or MSc astronomy students to get hands-on experience of work at an international observatory. Successful applicants will spend one year on La Palma, participating in survey observations with the WEAVE multi-object spectrograph on the 4.2-m William Herschel Telescope, and having the opportunity to work on projects supervised by ING staff. The studentship programme is open to anyone, but we particularly welcome applicants from our three partner countries: the Netherlands, Spain and the UK.

We would be grateful if you would draw the attention of suitable
candidates to this opportunity.
