👻 The Whispering Path: A Halloween Tale
Nobody in Ravenshade dared to enter the forest after dusk. The villagers claimed the trees remembered every scream ever uttered beneath their branches… and repeated them when the moon rose high enough to listen. 🌙
But curiosity is a cruel companion.
On Halloween night, Evelyn walked toward "The Whispering Path". Flashlight in hand, stubborn heart, she sought proof that ghosts didn't exist.
The moment she crossed the first line of trees, the air changed. The forest went breathlessly still, watching.
She tried to laugh it off, but then she heard soft footsteps behind her.
Tap… Tap… Tap…
She spun around. Nothing. Just hundreds of trees standing closer than they should.
She told herself to keep going, but the deeper she walked, the colder the air became. Her breath drifted like fog. The footsteps returned, and this time, they did not stop when she turned.
A faint glow appeared ahead. Pale, ethereal. Evelyn froze.
It wasn’t the moon. It was a girl.
A figure floating above the ground, draped in ghostly strands of hair and swirling mist. Her eyes were enormous and black. Her face, young but wrong—too smooth, too still, too void.
“What… are you?” Evelyn whispered.
The spirit tilted her head. Her voice, when it came, was not spoken aloud but breathed inside Evelyn’s skull:
“Help me.”
Evelyn tried to move. Her legs refused. “Cold…”, the ghost moaned. “So cold… Stay with me.”
The trees around them groaned—low, rumbling, hungry. Roots twisted under the soil, dragging at Evelyn’s feet. She mustered every ounce of strength left, broke free, and ran blindly. Branches clawed at her, and the whispers chased her, louder: “Stay… Stay… Stay…”
She didn’t stop until she burst out of the forest and collapsed onto the road. The whispers ended abruptly.
She never went back.
But some nights, just as she begins to fall asleep, she hears soft footsteps approaching her window.
Tap… Tap… Tap…
And a cold whisper: “You promised to stay…” 🥶
