The Solar Eclipse – 12 August 2026

Tomorrow, Spain will experience one of the most spectacular astronomical events of the year: a solar eclipse! ✨

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking some or all of the Sun’s light.

Across part of northern Spain, the Moon will completely cover the Sun, creating a total solar eclipse. Here in Salamanca, we are just outside the path of totality, but the eclipse will still be extraordinary: almost 99.7% of the Sun will be covered at its maximum. 🌒

📍 The Junta de Castilla y León has established eight recommended observation locations in the province of Salamanca: Salamanca, Santa Marta de Tormes, Alba de Tormes, Salvatierra de Tormes, Saucelle, Pereña de la Ribera, Villar de Gallimazo and Villarino de los Aires.

⚠️ Remember: never look directly at the Sun without certified eclipse glasses. In Salamanca there will be no totality, so eye protection must be used whenever you look at the Sun.

💧 When a village becomes a work of art.

From 17–19 July 2026, the small village of Morille, just 18 km from Salamanca, will host the 23rd PAN Festival.

PAN brings together poetry, music, exhibitions, performance art and rural heritage. This year’s theme is H₂O, and artists from Spain, Portugal and other countries will transform streets, buildings and countryside spaces into temporary cultural venues.

Morille is also home to one of Spain’s most unusual contemporary art projects: the Art Cemetery, where artworks are ceremonially buried and documented.

After the Morille weekend, the festival continues in Vilarelhos, Portugal, from 24–26 July.

❄️ INSIDE SALAMANCA: EL POZO DE LAS NIEVES

How did people keep food cold before refrigerators existed?

In eighteenth-century Salamanca, snow was transported from the mountains, carried by mules and stored deep underground in the Pozo de las Nieves. The ice was used to preserve food, for therapeutic purposes and even to make ice cream and sorbets.

📚 INSIDE SALAMANCA

Did you know that one of Salamanca's most famous legends involves the Devil, a secret school, and a nobleman who escaped without his shadow?

Hidden beneath the city lies the Cave of Salamanca.

According to local tradition, the Devil taught secret lessons there to a small group of students. After seven years of study, one student was supposed to remain behind as payment.

The most famous version of the story tells of the Marqués de Villena. He escaped at the last moment—but allegedly left his shadow behind.

Today, visitors can still explore the remains of the crypt of the former Church of San Cebrián and discover this famous legend for themselves.

What is Juneteenth?

Many have heard the name, but not everyone knows the story behind it.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued.

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated across the United States as a day of freedom, resilience, reflection, family, community, and hope.

🐂✨ “Tente, necio!” — the legend behind Salamanca’s patron saint

Every June 12th, Salamanca celebrates Saint John of Sahagún, an Augustinian friar remembered not only for his faith, but also for helping bring peace to a city divided by violent rivalries.

Born in Sahagún in 1430, John González moved to Salamanca to study theology and canon law. He became a renowned preacher and helped reconcile the noble factions whose conflicts had troubled the city for years. He was also known for defending workers, ordinary citizens and the most vulnerable.

📍 The legend of Tentenecio

According to popular Salamanca folklore, a bull escaped and charged through the city streets. John stood in its path, raised his hand and commanded:

“¡Tente, necio!”
“Stop, foolish beast!”

The bull reportedly became calm and submitted before him. The street, previously known as Calle de Santa Catalina, became forever associated with those words: Tentenecio.

💧 The miracle of Pozo Amarillo

Another local tradition tells of a child who fell into a deep well. John tried to reach him with the cord from his habit, but it was too short. After the friar prayed, the water supposedly rose until the child could take hold of the cord and be rescued. The story is still remembered in Calle Pozo Amarillo.

🔎 A few facts you may not know

✨ He died on June 11, 1479, aged only 49.

✨ He was canonised in 1691 by Pope Innocent XII.

✨ Pope Pius IX declared him patron of the city and Diocese of Salamanca in 1868, establishing his feast on June 12.

✨ His remains are kept in a silver urn in the high altar of Salamanca’s New Cathedral.

✨ According to local tradition, the urn was protected by three separate keys, entrusted to the City Council, the Diocese and the Augustinians so that no institution could open it alone.
