Julia empezó como muchas de mis alumnas: quería mejorar su español. Nada más.

Durante meses tuvimos dos clases a la semana. Cuando su nivel llegó a casi B2, vino a Galicia a hacer una inmersión lingüística conmigo y con otras mujeres.

Pasamos una semana juntas. Después de esa experiencia, decidió estudiar Filología Hispánica en la universidad.

Ahora, en su carrera, tiene una asignatura entera sobre civilización y cultura gallega.

Me escribió hace poco desde Varsovia contándome que en cada clase de literatura española encuentra algo relacionado con Galicia.

Analizan la obra del escritor gallego Valle-Inclán y ella les enseña a sus compañeros la foto de su escultura en Pontevedra.

Aprobó un examen oral de español hablando sin barreras, con fluidez.
Me dijo algo que no se me va a olvidar: “antes no pensaba que 8 días en Galicia me darían para tanto.”

Esto es lo que pasa cuando aprendes un idioma dentro de su cultura, con sus calles, su gente y su literatura. El idioma deja de ser algo que estudias. Se convierte en algo que vives.

One of the biggest differences between textbook Spanish and real Spanish?

Filler words.

No one actually speaks in perfect, complete sentences. In real conversations, people pause, hesitate, think out loud. And in Spanish, they do it with words like o sea, pues, a ver, es que.

These little words don’t translate directly into English. But they are everywhere. And when you start using them, something shifts — you stop sounding like you’re reciting and start sounding like you’re actually speaking.

A ver buys you a second to think. Es que softens what you’re about to say. O sea helps you rephrase when the words don’t come out right the first time. Hombre shows you’re reacting, not just responding.

That’s not grammar. That’s fluency.

We don’t talk about this enough in Spanish class.

Most courses teach you “me duele la cabeza” and move on. But what about when your nose is bleeding, your back is killing you, or you just can’t catch your breath?

These are the phrases you actually need — at the doctor, at the pharmacy, or just telling a friend how you’re feeling.

And in Spanish, the structure is different from English. You don’t say “my arm itches.” You say me pica el brazo — literally, “it itches me, the arm.” The body part is the subject, not you.

Once you notice that pattern, all of these start to make sense together.

Save this for the next time your body is complaining in Spanish.

Your brain doesn’t store words in alphabetical order. It stores them in groups.

That’s why learning bolso, bolsa and bolsillo together is so much more effective than learning each one in a different lesson, weeks apart.

When words share a root, they help each other stick. You learn one and the others start to make sense. Cuchara and cucharón. Zapato and zapatilla. Barca and barco. Libro and libreta. Maletín and maleta. Hielo and helado.

This is how memory actually works — through connections, not lists.

So next time you learn a new word in Spanish, ask yourself: what other words live in the same family? That one question will do more for your vocabulary than any flashcard app.

You have probably heard these phrases dozens of times in Spanish. But did you know they all follow the same logic?

In English, the “-ever” words — whatever, wherever, whenever, however — are one of the clearest signs that the subjunctive is at work in Spanish.

Not because of a rule. Because of a meaning.

When something is open, when no option is fixed yet, when you are leaving the door wide open for any possibility — that is when Spanish reaches for the subjunctive.

One verb. Seven tenses. That’s what this reel is about.

Hiking in Spanish is “hacer senderismo,” but you’ll also hear “ir a hacer senderismo,” which works exactly like English “go hiking.” Same logic, same structure.

Now the part that trips people up. In the reel I say:

👉”Mañana haré senderismo” (Tomorrow I will hike) — that’s the future tense.

👉”Quizás el lunes haga senderismo” (Maybe I’ll hike on Monday) — that’s the present subjunctive.

Two completely different grammatical moods in Spanish. And yet in English, both come out as “I’ll hike.” Identical translation.

💡Here’s why: English doesn’t have a separate verb form to express doubt or possibility. It just adds a word like “maybe” in front of the normal verb. Spanish, instead, changes the shape of the verb itself whenever there’s uncertainty, wish, or emotion behind the action. That’s the subjunctive.

Keep in mind this match only happens in sentences like these two, where the idea is future possibility. In other contexts the subjunctive works differently and won’t translate the same way. That’s a topic for another reel.

This is exactly why the subjunctive feels so hard for English speakers. You’re not learning a new form, you’re learning to notice a category of meaning your own language doesn’t mark. The subjunctive isn’t memorized. It’s understood.
