EWES is a wilderness education school offering professional training in Europe.

Wilderness Guide Level 1 is a structured learning pathway focused on professional guiding in wilderness environments.

The program brings together technical outdoor skills, leadership practice and professional responsibility within a coherent training framework. Learning develops progressively through guided practice, shared decision-making, reflection and extended time in the field.

WG1 is designed as a continuous process rather than a collection of isolated modules. Skills, experience and responsibility are explored together, within real group contexts and diverse environments, allowing participants to engage with the full scope of professional guiding.

Positioned between personal outdoor experience and professional guiding standards, Wilderness Guide Level 1 offers a context to explore guiding roles, test professional frameworks and clarify future directions.

WG1 runs in spring and autumn.

In this training, there are two journeys.

One is technical: learning skills, systems and procedures in real winter conditions.

The other is internal: awareness, confidence and how you show up when things get demanding.

In the snow, these two journeys don’t stay separate for long.

They meet through movement, shared effort, learning moments and simple meals at the end of the day.

This is how we train at EWES.

Training in wilderness environments requires continuous attention to conditions.

Cold ground, snow, limited shelter and changing weather shape how camps are set, equipment is managed and daily routines are adapted.

Movement follows: walking through snow, crossing cold streams, carrying packs across varied terrain. These situations require coordination, pacing and clear decisions, taken in relation to the group and the environment.

Through repeated exposure to these contexts, technical skills and leadership practice are developed side by side, shaped by terrain, weather and shared responsibility.

WAFA training takes place in challenging conditions: low light, cold temperatures, limited visibility and operational constraints. Participants work with patient assessment, immobilisation and evacuation scenarios that require attention, coordination and clear communication.

Rope systems, team coordination and shared decision-making are practiced step by step, within structured exercises and realistic group settings.

This is learning in nature.

The EWES Wilderness Guide pathway is built step by step.

It begins with the Wilderness Guide Level 1 Program, starting with the online module and continuing into the core modules in the field, where guiding foundations, leadership and essential skills are developed.

From there, participants choose 2 out of 3 elective specializations:

❄️Cold Environments, 🏜️Arid Environments or 🌿Wilder Nature.

Once the pathway is completed, certification as Wilderness Guide Level 1 is available for those who decide to take that step, including WAFA – Wilderness Advanced First Aid.

In cold environments, leadership begins long before action.

It starts with observation: reading the terrain, understanding weather patterns and sensing what is happening within the group.

During the Cold Environments specialization of the Wilderness Guide Level 1, decision-making is trained as a lived skill — shaped by preparation, attention and calm assessment under real winter conditions.

At EWES, judgment is not taught as theory, but developed through experience, reflection and exposure to demanding contexts.

This is the kind of learning that stays with you long after you leave the field.

The Cold Environments module takes place now, in February.

The next edition will not run again until next year.

This specialization is part of the Wilderness Guide Level 1 (WG1) training pathway and focuses on developing the skills, awareness and decision-making required to operate in cold and snowy environments.

We are very happy with the group that has committed to taking part in this module — a motivated and solid team ready to train, learn and work together in real winter conditions.

If you are considering starting the WG1 journey, Cold Environments is a powerful example of what the training involves and how the pathway prepares future wilderness guides.

Fire is never just fire.🔥

In the field, small details make the difference — how you prepare, what you observe, and the sequence of each action. Learning to make fire is about understanding materials, conditions and timing, not just technique.

At EWES, hard skills are taught directly in nature, where instructors share practical knowledge, subtle adjustments and field-tested insights that only experience provides.

These are the skills that build competence, confidence and autonomy — learned through practice, attention and repetition.
