The effects of global warming are undeniable. In most cases, this does not have a direct effect on gemstones but there are a select few (Organic Gems) that are affected by it; namely coral and the production of pearls.

In the June issue of Gemmology Today, Dutch Gemmologist and CEO of the Dutch Gem Academy Leone Langeslag looks at coral and the importance of CITES.

If corals do become extinct, so will the fish and if the experts are correct, this could lead to around 40% of the world's tropical reef fish disappearing. Food for thought!

Call me old-fashioned but there is something special about receiving a letter or a card from a foreign destination. Wondering how many hands it has passed through as it made its way around the world. There is a romance to letters and stamps that emails will never replace.

David Papaux was kind enough to share his amazing collection of gem and mineral stamps. Not an easy article to lay out but worth the effort.

When you are required to explain a theory or a concept to some-one for the first time, it forces you to really analyze what you are going to talk about, to dissect it and reconstruct it in a way that will make sense. During this process, you often find situations that leave you shaking your head and asking the question why?

This is particularly true of diamond grading and the different systems that are available in the market place. Can you imagine if 2 + 2 = 4 but 6 + 6 also equalled 4? Of course not, so why are we doing it with the grading of diamonds?

Check out the second part of 'Speaking the same Language' in the latest issue of Gemmology Today.
