For almost 45 years, since the first World Climate Conference, we have known that the health of our planet is deteriorating. In recent years in particular, the negative consequences of climate change have become increasingly apparent. 

This new awareness has highlighted the need for a research approach that can address the many challenges associated with caring for planet Earth in a cross-cutting way. 

This need has given rise to the field of planetary health, which seeks to understand the impact of human activity on the planet. This is done by reconstructing the cause-effect processes that directly or indirectly affect the bio-psycho-social well-being of individuals.

Experiential pedagogies such as service-learning can help to facilitate change towards planetary health because they do not simply provide in-depth knowledge or awareness, but rather promote transformative action through the engaged participation of students at all levels of education.

Los fuertes cambios sociales de nuestro tiempo exigen que la universidad se esfuerce por dotar a sus estudiantes de las herramientas necesarias para afrontar los retos actuales. The iApS unit develops innovative service-learning proposals applicable to different formal education levels. In addition, we are committed to promoting the educational approach of service-learning in various ways. 

We believe that it is necessary to certify the commitment of professors in developing high quality educational projects. The unit supports the strategic advocacy of service-learning and promotes alliances, agreements and synergies between institutions. iApS also aims to advise on the implementation of projects adapted to the sector, discipline and context. 

We encourage the creation of guidelines for the development of service-learning to promote the dissemination of science and technology. Last but not least, iApS works to raise funds to invest in projects related to the unit’s interests, such as the institutionalisation of the Balearic Service-Learning Observatory.
