Why Teens Stop Trying — and Achieving — at School 28/06/2026

"Better not try than be seen failing."

It looks like defiance. It looks like apathy. It looks like he just wants to play video games.

Teen boys with ADHD aren't avoiding work; they are avoiding the overwhelming shame of a public mistake.

ADHD teens generally struggle with starting tasks, time blindness, planning, organising, emotional reactions...

So wearing the mask of "the kid who doesn't care" or "the class clown" is socially safer than trying hard and still failing in front of peers.

Not completing tasks or being disengaged in class is often a calculated retreat to protect their self-esteem.

To get them back, we have to lower the emotional stakes of making a mistake (e.g. private feedback, winnable micro-tasks and shifting the focus from perfection to progress)

If you are parenting or teaching a teenage boy with ADHD who has disengaged from school, you may want to read this article: https://www.additudemag.com/motivation-problems-teens-with-adhd/?ecd=wnl_additude_260613_cons_adhd_parent&goal=0_d9446392d6-9bf94e9e4b-328311305

From land allocation to funding: an autism charity’s fight for a care home | Sur in English 27/06/2026

A very positive project for our community. 👏

The Ángel Rivière Organisation is taking the first steps towards creating a residential centre in Marbella (Elviria) for autistic people with different support needs. The centre aims to provide specialist care for those with the highest support needs (80–90% disability), while also supporting autistic adults with lower support needs to develop life skills, access employment, and live as independently as possible.

💙 Another beautiful afternoon yesterday at our Neurodivergent Club meet-up in 3 Jardines park in San Pedro. The young people naturally drifted together, chatted, shared interests, laughed, joked and played games.

Everyone was relaxed. There was no pressure to fit in, mask or worry about being judged for being "different".

Within an accepting environment, connections happen naturally.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday and I look forward to meeting everyone, and hopefully new joiners after the summer. 💙

A very touching and beautifully made video to show that supporting autistic people is often not about doing something extraordinary — it’s about the small everyday ways we “show up”.

Giving someone a bit more time. Being flexible. Listening without judgement. Trying to understand experiences different from our own. Speaking up when needed.

✨ Social Club Meet-up for Neurodivergent Teens ✨

📅 Saturday 9th May
🕓 From 4pm
📍 Parque Tres Jardines, San Pedro de Alcántara

We’re meeting again for a relaxed and supportive afternoon where teens can connect at their own pace, with no pressure or expectations. Parents are, as always, very welcome to stay and chat.

If anyone would like to arrive earlier, there’s a lovely cafeteria in the park (serving mainly pizza and Thai food) where you can have lunch beforehand.

As our group is growing, this time we’ll meet at 4pm in a quieter area of the park. I’ll send the exact location via WhatsApp on the day to those who confirm attendance.

There will be a few board games and some ball/racket games for anyone who feels like joining in. Everyone is welcome to play or walk around, stand or sit on picnic blankets, chat or just enjoy this lovely space.

If you and your teen would like to join, just send me a message — and feel free to share with anyone who might benefit 🙂
