𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗲𝘁 : A Simple Trick to Overcome Fear of the Water
It really helps my clients overcome their fear of water when they can become visual and playful with the outcome they want to achieve. Instead of focusing on fear, they focus on the experience they want to feel.
For some beginners learning to swim, this might mean imagining themselves enjoying a relaxing spa day. One of my clients benefited enormously from visualising herself in a spa environment, swimming with ease and pleasure. The “carrot” becomes the end result — the feeling of relaxation, freedom, and enjoyment that swimming brings.
When the mind has something positive to aim toward, it stops replaying the old fear “tape” on repeat. My clients often progress faster when they hold their desired outcome in mind while learning new skills and swim techniques. It brings a smile to their face and makes the learning journey far more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Their bodies naturally begin to soften and relax into the practice. Instead of waiting for some future day when they will “finally” learn to swim, they begin enjoying the water in the present moment.
Visualisation plays a key role in transformation and acts as a powerful catalyst for change.
Even simply imagining a spa environment can evoke feelings of luxury, relaxation, decadence, and bliss. These feelings can be gently infused into everyday pool sessions, giving beginners something positive and playful to lean into. It adds lightness to the experience and helps cultivate a genuine love of water.
With weekly practice, this becomes an embodied experience. Over time, the mind begins to rewire itself to expect calm, indulgent, and pleasurable sensations in the water. Fear gradually softens and fades.
What once felt unknown becomes familiar. Through visualisation and the feeling of the wish fulfilled, we begin to program the mind and body to experience the water with confidence, ease, and enjoyment.

Cold water swimming isn’t extreme. It’s clarifying.
For centuries, from Hippocrates onwards, cold exposure has been used to restore the body and sharpen the mind. Today we understand more about its impact on stress resilience and mood — but what interests me most goes beyond the data.
It’s what happens in the moment of entry.
As a swimming teacher and open water coach in Marbella, I watch it every week. The instant someone steps into the sea, the noise drops away. Breath becomes intentional. The nervous system lights up. There is no performance. Just truth.
And that is where transformation begins.
Cold water is a mirror.
It shows you how you respond to intensity.
It reveals your patterns.
It invites regulation instead of reaction.
This is the same principle I work with inside my transformational containers for leaders. Whether in the sea or in a high-level coaching space, the work is about capacity — expanding your ability to stay present inside pressure, uncertainty, or growth.
My swimmers often say afterwards:
“I feel clear.”
“I feel powerful.”
“I feel like I’ve come back to myself.”
That’s not bravado. That’s nervous system mastery. That’s embodied leadership.
Cold water isn’t a badge of honour. It’s a practice. A doorway. A reminder that you can meet intensity and remain steady.

And if you’re in Marbella, I guide outdoor sea swims designed to build confidence, resilience and connection — not just to the water, but to yourself.
Because whether in business, leadership, grief, or growth — the question is always the same:
Can you stay present when it gets uncomfortable?
That’s the real work.

We discussed a rise in swimmers 'balcony-ing', risking their lives by choosing to jump from a balcony into a pool, and the dangers of strong currents in the sea even at knee depth. To watch the show see the comments below..
