👇🏻 The affirmative and negative imperative are not formed in the same way.

✅ “¡Ven!” (Come!)
✅ “¡No vengas!” (Don’t come!)
❌ “¡Ven no!”

The key to the negative is very simple:

negative imperative = subjunctive

• Ven → No vengas
• Habla → No hables
• Come → No comas
• Hazlo → No lo hagas

🤔 Why do we use the subjunctive if “being here” is a real fact?

“Me alegra que estés aquí”
(I’m glad you’re here)

🇪🇸 This is one of those Spanish rules that starts to make sense once you understand what lies behind it.

🟡 Me alegra que estés aquí. (I’m glad you’re here.)
🟡 Me sorprende que no lo sepas. (It surprises me that you don’t know it.)
🟡 Me molesta que llegues tarde. (It bothers me that you arrive late.)

When the subject experiencing the emotion and the subject performing the action are different, we use the subjunctive.

But:

🟡 Me alegra estar aquí. (I’m glad to be here.)

Why? Because the subject is the same.

The subjunctive doesn’t always relate to something “unreal.”

Sometimes, it simply has to do with how the people within the sentence relate to each other!

The same idea can be expressed in very different ways depending on your level:

🟡 A1: “Quiero un café.”
(I want a coffee.)
🔵 B1: “¿Me pones un café, por favor?”
(Could you get me a coffee, please?)
🟢 C1: “Perdona que te moleste, ¿me podrías poner un café cuando puedas?”
(Sorry to bother you,
could you get me a coffee when you have a moment?)

And the same applies to:

⏳Asking for more time
🚽Asking where the toilets are
👨🏻‍💼Asking to speak with the person in charge
