Spotify now lists limbo/ in its Provider Directory for record labels.

It's the list Spotify points labels to when they're looking for a partner to handle their music, and every provider on it meets Spotify's standards for delivering to the platform.

We're founder-owned and self-funded, and we keep a roster of long-term partners. Labels work directly with the people who build the platform, not a ticket queue.

To the labels and distributors already with us: this confirms how we handle your catalogs every day.

To those still choosing: this is how we'd handle yours.

“Independence means having control over the whole process.”

We spoke with Abdullah Geels from AudioMaze about the changing music industry, the growing consolidation of the independent market, and why staying independent is about more than just business.

For him, it’s about control, personal relationships, and keeping the music at the center.

Do you think independence is becoming more important in today’s music industry?

limbo/ now has a direct agreement with Beatport, making it easier to deliver electronic music to the platform through our infrastructure.

That's the first thing we hear when someone tells us why they left their last distributor.

The welcome, the demo, the calls, the promises. All of it shows up at the start. Then they sign, and the line goes quiet.

If you're lucky, emails come back two weeks later. The support ticket floats somewhere in a pile of other tickets. And the people who walked them through the whole sales process are gone right when they need them most.

limbo/ came out of that exact need. We couldn't find a place that treated us like people, so we built one.

Here, the relationship starts on the first call and it doesn't change after the contract. It grows. Being reachable matters more than almost anything else we do. If a label can't get a human on the line when something breaks hours before a release goes live, nothing else on the feature list counts for much.

We build AI and we use AI every single day. Nothing we've seen comes close to a real person who knows you, knows your artists, knows your catalog, and fixes the thing faster because of all that. Real people. Real names. One message, one call away.

Twenty years of choosing that over scale is how we ended up with the team we have now. Being heard is a basic human thing. No model changes that.

So we're curious: what's one thing a distributor or platform could do tomorrow that would make you feel like a person instead of a ticket number?

We talked to Abdullah Geels from AudioMaze about AI in music.

We agreed that there’s a difference between using AI as a tool and letting it do the whole job for you.
We also talked about a market flooded with fully AI-generated music, creating a lot of noise for real artists to compete with.

Where do you draw the line with AI? Let us know in the comments.

Rejections rarely happen for interesting reasons.

A UPC that doesn't validate. A cover with a logo the DSP rejects. A file that got exported lossy somewhere along the way. Nothing dramatic, and all of it expensive once the release is already out the door.

Dani walks through some of the eleven checks that run on every release before it ships: metadata, audio, artwork, lyrics.

Two worth pausing on: fingerprint matching, which surfaces covers, samples, shared beats and prior releases, and AI detection, which flags synthetic tracks so they ship labeled under each store's policy. Both protect your DSP relationships, not only the release in front of you.

A boutique label and a full-scale distributor don't need the same infrastructure.

They shouldn't be paying for the same stack.

That's the logic behind Music Blocks: you turn on the block that fits where your business is today, and add more as you grow. You can also turn one off. Most vendors only know how to add.

We mapped it into four stages. Most independent music businesses land in one of them.

Which one sounds like you right now?

Tell us where you are and we'll tell you which blocks we'd actually turn on.

Here's how a royalty advance works, step by step.

Your catalog already brings in revenue every month.
An advance lets you use part of what it will generate over the next few years, today.

We start with your actual royalties and your full earnings history. That number is what determines how much can be advanced.

You then receive that amount up front.

From there, the advance is recouped from a percentage of your royalties.

Once it's fully recouped, 100% of your royalties goes back to you.

The ownership rights never change hands. They stay yours from start to finish.

The capital comes from our investment partners.

limbo/ brings the infrastructure, the data, and the transparency.

How many intermediaries sit between your platform and the DSPs?

If you're building a music platform, the app was never the hard part.
It's the DSP contracts, the DDEX specs that shift per partner, the delivery layer that keeps needing work long after launch.

That's what pushes platforms into a chain of resellers, and takes their catalog data along for the ride.
This video breaks down what limbo/API puts underneath instead: direct deals with major DSPs plus Merlin deals, DDEX handled on our side, and one surface covering catalog, delivery, approvals and analytics.

Public docs, free sandbox, credentials in five minutes.

Curious how it fits your stack? Send us a DM.

Most independent artists know they can sell their catalog.
What a lot of them miss is the difference between a sale and a royalty advance.

An advance gets you cash now in exchange for a cut of the royalties your catalog keeps earning. A sale gets you a bigger payout, all at once, in exchange for handing over whatever you're selling.

Each one solves a different problem, and not every catalog qualifies for either.
