How do you manage conversations in English at startup ecosystem networking events?

This video will get you started!

07/08/2023

You don't need fancy vocab & idioms to communicate clearly in English.

๐ŸŽ™ In her pre match news conference, 's brilliant Dutch Head Coach Sarina Wiegman was asked if the "cat was out of the bag" about one of her players.

It's fair to say she hadn't heard that expression before, despite having a very high level of English. ๐Ÿ˜‚

The lesson from this is that you don't need fancy idioms to communicate clearly in English, especially when it's with other non native speakers.

It doesn't matter if it is:

- a pitch
- a networking events
- current or prospective investor meeting
- any other situation where you speak English

Keeping it simple, clear and concise makes it easier for everyone.

FYI "The cat's out of the bag" means a secret has been revealed.

As I write this the Lionesses have just won a penalty shootout against Nigeria to advance to the quarters. COME ON ENGLAND!!

Not what I was thinking in this pic, I was just hangry (angry because of hunger), and waiting for the young man behind me to barbecue my lunch.

But it is what I thought when I came across phrasal verbs in my TEFL course 11 years ago.

I had absolutely no idea what a phrasal verb was as a native speaker.

Not a scooby.

Nada.

And identifying what was a phrasal and what wasn't was a little tricky.

Was "look at" a phrasal verb?

No, that's just a collocation.

The truth is, I have no recollection as a native English speaker of even studying them at school.

We learned them as with every other piece of vocabulary, by using them. They were not phrasal verbs, just another verb.

And this, in my opinion, is where teaching English as a foreign language has it wrong.

Why do we teach normal verbs first and then consider phrasal verbs as a seperate topic?

And a seperate topic that sends shivers down the spine of every English learner.

It just doesn't make sense.

My advice to you is not to see phrasal verbs as a complicated, advanced topic on your English learning journey.

For example, "Get up" is easy for you to use as you learn it as a normal verb right from the start.

You'd be amazed how many founders forget how to say large numbers in English. Metrics need to roll off the tongue or they will cause doubt in the investor.

If they ask you a question you weren't expecting or don't know the answer to, you'll need to know how to approach that situation in English. See link to "dealing with difficult questions" post in the comments below.
