This past weekend SUMC went on its first cultural trip of the semester and the destination this time was…. SEVILLA 💃🏻

Seville stands out among cities in Spain and that is reflected just by looking at it skyline. The trio of buildings composed of La Giralda, the Seville Cathedral, and the Royal Alcázar make up one of the most impressive sets of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO

While visiting the city, we toured all of its historic monuments, took time to see Plaza de España (arguably the most decorated in the country), and even got to see a stunning flamenco show 💃🏻

We hope our students enjoyed Sevilla as much as we liked taking them. Mil gracias!

Last Friday, our HST 358 History of Spain class took a day trip to some of the most beautiful palaces near Madrid - La Granja and Riofrío! These two palaces are known for being the vacation home of many Spanish monarchs throughout history, as well as for having exquisite gardens 💐💐

The semester has BEGUN!

This semester, our Welcome Trip was to... Valencia 🍊🔥

Located on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, the 2,000-year-old city boasts wide sandy beaches, striking architecture, a buzzing food scene and culture, without the crowds found in other large Spanish cities.

While we were there, we saw the charming old town and how it contrasts with the large futuristic buildings of the City of the Arts and the Sciences, explored the Albufera National Park where we had a paella lunch🥘, as well as some activities for our students to get to know each other

Yesterday, our Politics of Spain class (POLS 367) visited Spain’s Congress building.

The Congress of the Deputies, as it is called in English, is the lower house of Spain’s legislative branch. This is the body tasked with deliberating and approving most of the country’s laws.

Made up of 350 members, the body represents all of the countries’ provinces and currently consists of 10 political parties.

Fun fact: during the last legislative term starting in 2019, women made up 48% of all members. Making Spain the European country with the highest percentage of women in parliament.

SUFFOLK SERVES 🤝🏼

The group of 15 Suffolk students who participated in the Suffolk Serves program would like to say thank you to our community partners for their welcoming attitude and for showing them the value of community work. Students saw how neighbors in San Fermin area support each other, have managed to make their claims heard, and they now have better services and more opportunities for personal growth. Through the urban vegetable patch, after-school programs, youth groups, libraries, employment search support, food banks, and much more.

Students also loved feeding and petting animals at Kuna Ibérica, but what they most appreciated was the community experience. Thank you, San Fermin, ALUCINOS and Amed at the vegetable patch!
