Benito Lauret Aguirregabiria has writtten: Talking about Dior store, in a technological facade it can be always found three systems: supporting wall/frame, external finishing and internal finishing. Everyone of them deserves its own attention to performance and compatibility with the rest of systems. Let's start with external finishing, which in fact can only be done with two materials: GRC and GRP. Why? because both can adapt to complex forms as shown in this project. In some countries is easier to work with GRC (cement based) while in others GRP (polyester based) is the best choice. Both are composite materials, reinforced by glass fibre and applied by layers over a mould which has the negative form to finally extract the proper positive shape. So moulds are the key of the process and also the main input in the final price of the facade panels. In general it takes a lot of time and labour to make and finish these moulds, which means high price, which in this case cannot be diluted by panel repetition, as they are unique.
Dior store uses GRP panels, connected to an internal steel frame to stiffen the panels, due to their big size. In fact this steel frame has aa accurate design to serve both to move and transport the big panels to site and to finally install them on the facade. So the external finishing system includes its own stiffening frame.

This is a series of posts about facade construction of Dior Flagship store at Seoul. It is an example of current state of the art possibilities to materialise a free form high design facade by well known architect Christian de Portzamparc. Some building details can be found in the Web, but for those who want to go one step beyond the squematism or lack of technical definition of the actual systems used in the building I will be commenting them and proposing alternative definition of them.
