Exploring medieval Europe through its history and architecture🏰

Schiller International University students from visited Speyer Cathedral with Dr. hubert hieke to explore one of the most significant monuments of medieval European history.

During the guided tour, students learned about the cathedral’s role as a symbol of imperial power during the Holy Roman Empire and its significance as the burial place of emperors and kings for nearly three centuries. As the largest Romanesque church in the world, Speyer Cathedral offers valuable insight into the political, religious and architectural history of medieval Europe.

The visit also gave students time to explore the historic city of Speyer and discover more of the cultural heritage surrounding their campus.

Experiences like these help students place historical events and institutions in context, connecting academic knowledge with the places where history unfolded.

How does monetary policy work in practice? Our Heidelberg students went straight to the source 🇪🇺📊

Students from Schiller’s campus recently visited the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt with Dr. Hubert Hieke, connecting topics from their Macroeconomics and Economics of Developing Countries courses with one of Europe’s key financial institutions.

During the visit, students explored the ECB’s premises and heard from a member of staff about its objectives, structure and role in shaping monetary policy and supporting economic stability across the euro area.

For students studying economics, understanding how institutions operate and influence markets, businesses and everyday life adds a valuable dimension to the theories they discuss in class.

Thank you to Dr. Hubert Hieke for organizing the visit and helping students connect academic concepts with the institutions shaping Europe’s economy.

What happens when the city becomes part of the classroom?🌍

For Schiller students in , the answer recently took them to Puerta del Sol, where they explored civic mobilization and the relationship between citizen movements, civil society and democratic institutions.

Students from International Relations and Diplomacy, International Business, and International Hospitality and Tourism Management joined the visit as part of their history, politics and foreign affairs classes.

Accompanied by Professor Alan Coyne, they observed how volunteers and civil society organizations contributed to the camp’s activities, then connected what they saw with topics discussed in class, from democratic participation and political communication to inequality and collective action.

The experience will continue back on campus, where students will use written reflections and classroom discussions to analyze their observations and connect them with academic concepts.

This is experiential learning in action: asking questions, examining real-world situations and looking at complex issues from different perspectives.

A little heart can make a meaningful difference 💙

Our Heidelberg students recently visited the NCT National Center for Tumor diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, bringing heart-shaped pillows they had made during a summer crafting session in collaboration with the Heidelberg International Professional Women’s Forum (HIP) e.V.

The pillows were donated to patients as a gesture of comfort and support. But the visit offered students something more, too: a closer look at how research, healthcare professionals and patient care come together to improve lives.

By learning about the NCT’s work in cancer research and treatment, students saw how scientific progress connects with the people it ultimately serves. It was a meaningful opportunity to put Schiller’s values into practice through community engagement, experiential learning and a deeper understanding of the world around us.

A heartfelt thank you to the Heidelberg International Women's Club and the NCT team for welcoming our students and making this experience possible!
