【Big success of Complutense! 29 master's degrees among the top 5, and 9 in 1st place】

According to the 2023 edition of 250 best Master's Degrees in Spain, published by El Mundo, Complutense University is honoured the best ranked Spanish university.

Complutense University gained the highest number of best masters, with 9 in total, of which 5 are official Masters and 4 are proper Masters. In addition, it also has 5 masters in 2nd place (one more than last year) and 5 masters in 3rd place.

【Inauguration of the 36th edition of the Summer School in Complutense University】

On July 3rd, Rector Joaquín Goyache formally opened the 36th iteration of the Complutense University Summer School in San Lorenzo de El Escorial. The opening lecture was given by Complutense University Professor Mara Emilia Casas. She indicated that nearly 80 educational and cultural activities will be held during the next four weeks.

"The Summer School is a unique experience. It consists of debate and the exchange of ideas, committing to knowledge and to learning," said the rector. He recalled that no other activity throughout the year manages to attract people of such different backgrounds, ages and origins.

For the first time in its history, the Summer School has a guest country, Mexico. Quirino Ordaz, the Mexican ambassador, expressed gratitude for his nation being chosen as the inaugural special guest. He underlined that the Complutense Summer School uses a "fresh, attractive and interesting" way to share knowledge.
Due to the cancellation of the political section, this edition of Summer School is less political, but has more culture, artistic creation, science and knowledge.

【UCM reached 171st place in QS Rankings, as top 12% university worldwide】

The Complutense University of Madrid advanced 55 positions in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings. It ranks 3rd in Spain and 66th in Europe, advancing one position nationally and 19 positions in Europe, compared to last year's results.

The 2024 edition of QS World University Rankings evaluated 35 Spanish institutions. UCM is the first national university in terms of reputation among employers and employment results. In addition, it ranks second nationally in both academic reputation and sustainability.

It’s necessary to underline that, even though Complutense University kept getting better positions these years, it’s still the best result that it has ever obtained in the history of its participation in QS Rankings.

【The UCM Summer School now has the programme】

The 36th Summer School already has its programme.

🤩The opening ceremony will be held on the 3rd of July at the Escorial María Cristina University Centre, with a lecture presented by María Emilia Casas, the jurist and first president of the Constitutional Court. The closing conference will be hosted by Carmelo Vázquez, professor of the Faculty of Psychology at Complutense University.

The Summer School of the Complutense University of Madrid is based on the collaboration and sponsorship of a hundred companies and collaborating institutions, including Mango, Hyundai and the City Council of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. 【 is honored the 'Best rookie' in Spain in the Cajamar UniversityHack's 'Hall of Fame 2023'】

The Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) took home ✨the 'Best rookie'✨ prize among the 33 best universities and training centres in Spain with specialised courses in artificial intelligence, data science, big data and machine learning. The prize was awarded during the 'Hall of Flame 2023' of Cajamar UniversityHack Datathon, the most significant data analytics competition in the country.

In this 2022 edition of the competition, two groups of students from UCM's Master Propio programs won 2️⃣nd and 3️⃣rd place in different categories. They’re respectively from the Master of Big Data and Business Analytics in the Faculty of Statistical Studies, and the Master of Big Data and Data Science in the Faculty of Commerce and Tourism.

【🎉La Complutense, best Spanish university according to the ranking of El Mundo】

🥰The Complutense University is considered the best Spanish university, according to the Ranking "Las 50 carreras" of the newspaper El Mundo. The ranking lists the 50 most sought-after degrees and the five most recommended universities to study them.

1️⃣The ranking considers that the Complutense is the best university in Spain to study 7 majors: English Studies, Pharmacy, History, History of Art, Early Childhood Education, Primary Education and Dentistry.

2️⃣Complutense is also found in second place for the following majors: Fine Arts, Hispanic Philology, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Optics and Optometry, Journalism, Psychology and Veterinary Science.

3️⃣Then in third place, the university is qualified in Food Science and Technology, Audiovisual Communication, Law, Physics, Medicine and International Relations.

4️⃣In fourth place, we could find Biology, Political Science and Administration, Nursing, along with Nutrition and Dietetics.

5️⃣In fifth place, Complutense also provides two reputed majors, which are respectively ADE-Law and Social Work.

【🎊The UCM University Theatre Competition Awards Gala】

On the 5th of June, in the auditorium of the Faculties of Philology and Philosophy, the awards gala of the 25th edition of the UCM University Theatre Competition was held.

1️⃣Directed by the company Triaca, the gala has crowned ✨La Escena Roja✨, a play with amusing but feigned indifference, with six following awards: Best Leading Actress, Best Leading Actor, Best Play, Best Original Text, Best Sound Space.

2️⃣✨Con la mirada de Lorca✨, by the group Complutum, won the second prize. It has been awarded Best Playwriting and Best Original Music.

3️⃣The third prize in the competition went to ✨El tiempo que estemos juntos✨, presented by Europa Teatro. The play also won Best Direction and Best Actor in Supporting Role.

In addition to these three award winners, a special mention went to the play ✨En la luna✨, directed by Cómicos de Adamuc.

【The Complutense Institute of Musical Sciences revives the opera "Gonzalo di Cordova"】

After a year of research and a digital edition of the work, the audience of the Gran Teatro de Córdoba has been able to enjoy, on 3 June 2023, the concert version of the opera Gonzalo di Cordova, "an intense and inspired score, close to Verdi's early operas". The revival and digital edition of the score have been carried out within the framework of the research project DEePMusic:
👉Digitisation of the Musical Heritage Ecosystem, led by the ICCMU (Complutense Institute of Musical Sciences).

✨The Spanish composer Antonio Reparaz's music has been performed once more, this time by the Orchestra of Cordoba, 166 years after its composition and after its top-rated premiere in 1857. ICCMU explains that in May 2022, the orchestra presented them with the challenge of "reviving and staging a unique work to celebrate its 30th anniversary, as well as the 150th anniversary of the Gran Teatro".

➡For one whole year, the ICCMU research team has been working on the revival of this work, whose value has been recognised by the research of musicologists Emilio Casares and Ana María Liberal. According to the Institute, "the revival has involved making a new copy from the original sources, as well as making the version for vocal performance and piano and the digital orchestral materials".

【Cooking the Wave 2023!】

The Campus of Moncloa is hosting a new initiative of the European Food Wave project, regarding healthy and sustainable food. The Madrid City Council promotes the project in collaboration with Complutense University on the Moncloa campus.

Cooking the Wave, a sustainable and healthy cooking festival, will be held:
⏰on the 8th of June, from 11:00 to 15:00
📍on the square in front of the Student Building, across from the metro station of Ciudad Universitaria.

6 renowned chefs will attend the event and each will prepare two menus. They will also explain the nutritional characteristics of the products and the culinary techniques used to those who attend the workshop. Including Areta Cake, El Fogón Verde, Viena Capellanes, Norte Joven, Cocina Regenerativa and Cookpad.
😋Finally, the participating university community members will taste the free, tasty, sustainable and healthy tapas, prepared in the 12 different workshops.

In addition to the cooking workshops, other events will also be presented on the square:
👉the "Bye, bye CO 2" and Kilómetro Cero workshops;
👉the information stands of Madrid Salud, DG Cleanliness and Waste, and the University itself;
👉the exhibition of "Food and Climate Change" by Lola García;

【Complutense University opens the first Disc-Golf course in Madrid!】

Complutense University has become the first Spanish university to have a disc-golf course, an interesting sport presented in more than 50 countries worldwide. The "Complutense Disc-golf Course" is also the first permanent course of this kind of sport located inside of the Community of Madrid.

The Disc-Golf course was inaugurated on the 26th of May by:
➡️Isabel García, the vice-rector of the University’s Culture, Sports and Extension Department;
➡️Jorge Berasategui, the president of the association Madrid International Disc-Golf;
➡️Paul McBeth, six times world champion in this sport.

arrived in Spain in 2012 and now there are already fifteen clubs in different provinces with about 300 federated players. The one at Complutense is the ninth 18-basket course opened in Spain.
