Every May, I Tri da Cruci brings the streets of Tropea to life—through tradition, rhythm, and powerful symbols.
Famous folk games fill the days: the greasy pole, sack races, “pasta abbruscenti,” and the classic egg-and-spoon challenge—fun for all ages, all set to the beat of drums.
But the true highlight? The Giants.
Mata and Grifone—over 3 meters tall—dance through the historic streets in a ritual known as caricatumbula. These papier-mâché figures, rich in legend, recall the expulsion of Turkish pirates and embody the spirit of the town.
And at night, everything ends with u camejuzzu i focu—a camel-shaped structure filled with fireworks, echoing a piece of Tropea’s past.
A celebration where history moves, dances… and comes alive.

The Mystery in Stone: Castel del Monte.
Rising alone on a hill in Apulia, Castel del Monte looks almost unreal — perfectly symmetrical, wrapped in mystery, and shaped like an octagon inside and out.
Built by Emperor Frederick II in the 13th century, its purpose is still debated: fortress, hunting lodge, or something more symbolic? Every corner seems designed to make you wonder.
It is such a masterpiece of mathematical design that it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Yet, it remains surprisingly little known abroad—a quiet corner of Italy still waiting to be explored.
Fun fact: Castel del Monte has appeared on numerous Italian stamps and even on the Italian 1 euro cent coin.
📍 Just about 1 hour from our new Italian school in Bari, making it a perfect half-day escape.
