moving to Spain for a few weeks or months? here are some social etiquette things our students picked up pretty quickly 🇪🇸👇
👋 Say hello when you walk in
Entering a small shop, restaurant, or café? A quick “hola” or “buenas” goes a long way.
🍽️ Take your time eating
Meals are social here. Don’t feel like you need to rush through dinner and leave. Get comfortable, talk, order another drink, enjoy it.
☕ Café time is actually café time
Sitting outside with a coffee for an hour or two is completely normal. No need to constantly order something new.
🗣️ Keep your voice down
Spain is social and lively, but shouting across a restaurant or talking super loudly in public can make you stand out as a tourist.
🚪 Respect the little rules of someone’s home
If you’re staying with a host family, pay attention to their routines. Ask questions, communicate your plans, and remember you’re sharing their home.
💶 Don’t assume everything works like home
Meal times, opening hours, tipping, greetings, and personal space can all feel a little different at first. Part of studying abroad is learning those differences instead of expecting everything to work the same way.
🌍 And honestly, that’s one of the best parts of living abroad.
You’re not just learning Spanish in a classroom. You’re learning how people live, communicate, eat, socialize, and go about their everyday lives.
