Something personal I want to share.

For twenty six years I've been teaching artists and students a way of seeing — how to notice what's alive in your work, how to separate signal from noise, how to let the practice change you instead of just chasing finished pieces.

I've finally given that practice a proper name: ApoKrino. It means creative discernment — learning to separate, judge, respond, and bring things into clearer relation.

I'm building it into an art app (live) and a maker app (live but not quite complete). I am writing about the ideas behind it on Substack. Both are works in progress, and I'd love your company along the way.

ApoKrinoArts will be offering a new series of limited classes for the fall of 2024. The first cohort of five students will study the creative process of Picasso at the beginning of his career. We will explore:

The different innovation styles artists use based on current research

How Picasso's innovation style produced unique results

We will study the creation of Les Saltimbanques from idea to final museum work.

Les Saltimbanques was one of his first major works and established him as a major artist.

We will learn to create using this process. Choose subjects from real life- make Preparatory sketches, create preliminary compositions, critique and re-iterate using Picasso's sketchbooks as a guide.

The course will be offered in two 6 weeks sessions so students who wish to master this creative process and create a series of works in this way can do so. Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm Hong Kong Time and a second session for EU students from 5-6 PM on the same days. Two hours a week for six weeks. Join us as we explore the mind and creative habits of a genius!
