Every year, we meet Year 11 students
who tell us something that still surprises us:

“I’ve never done a practical.”

No laboratory work.
No hands-on experiments.
No real experience of science in action.

And yet, practical work is not optional.

It is essential.

Science is not only theory.
It is observation.
It is testing.
It is making mistakes and understanding why.

At Phoenix College Málaga, practical work is a core part of learning.

Not just because it deepens understanding
but because it prepares students properly.

A Level exams include practical components.

Students are expected to:

“Proper teaching”

During a recent visit, one parent said something that stayed with us:

“There is proper teaching here.”

It’s a simple phrase.
But it carries weight.

Because “proper teaching” is not about appearances.

It’s about what happens in the classroom:

• Lessons that are structured and purposeful
• Explanations that build real understanding
• Teachers who know their subject, deeply
• Feedback that is clear, direct and useful
• Expectations that are consistent and taken seriously

It is not rushed.
It is not superficial.
It is not performative.

At Phoenix College Málaga, proper teaching means:

En una visita reciente, unos padres comentaron algo que se nos quedó grabado:

Es una expresión sencilla.

Tiene que ver con lo que ocurre dentro del aula:

No es algo acelerado.

During Semana Santa

During Semana Santa, as we often do at Phoenix College Málaga,
we opened our doors.

From our balconies in the very centre of Málaga,
we had the privilege of watching the processions pass by,
a tradition that is deeply part of the city.

It’s one of those moments where the College becomes part of something larger.
Of the streets.
Of the rhythm of Málaga itself.

Families came.
Students came.

And, as always, something else happened too.

Former students returned.

They came back to visit.
To say hello.
To stand again in a place they once knew well.

And what stays with us is this:

They want to come back.

They still feel at home here.

Seeing them again — having grown, changed, matured —
is one of the most meaningful parts of what we do.

Education doesn’t end when students leave.

And sometimes, you only fully see its impact
when they walk back through the door.

Durante la Semana Santa

Durante la Semana Santa, como solemos hacer en Phoenix College Málaga,
abrimos nuestras puertas.

Desde nuestros balcones, en pleno centro de Málaga,
pudimos disfrutar del paso de los tronos,
una tradición profundamente arraigada en la ciudad.

Son momentos en los que el colllege forma parte de algo más grande.
De la calle.
Del pulso de Málaga.

Vinieron familias.
Vinieron alumnos y alumnas actuales.

Y, como siempre, ocurrió algo más.

Volvieron antiguos estudiantes.

Se acercaron.
Saludaron.
Volvieron a un lugar que conocen bien.

Y hay algo especialmente significativo en eso:

Quieren volver.

Siguen sintiendo este lugar como suyo.

Verlos/as de nuevo — habiendo crecido, cambiado, madurado —
es una de las partes más bonitas de nuestro trabajo.

La educación no termina cuando el alumnado se va.

Y muchas veces es cuando regresan
cuando realmente percibimos su impacto.

Well.. we are now in April.

And in a Sixth Form calendar, April matters.

By this point:

The syllabus is almost complete.
The major content has been covered.
The gaps are visible.
The targets are clear.

April is not about starting new things.

It’s about refining.

At Phoenix College Málaga, April means:

• Consolidation
• Timed practice
• Past papers
• Precision in exam technique
• Individual follow-up after January results

It is a month of sharpening.

Students know where they stand.

There is something we notice often at Phoenix College Málaga.

Many of our students carry strong artistic qualities.

They draw.
They play an instrument.
They write.
They design.

And they are also academically capable.

These are not opposites.

In fact, they often reinforce each other.

Creativity sharpens analysis.
Sensitivity deepens interpretation.
Imagination strengthens problem-solving.

Some of our students may go on to pursue artistic careers.

There are people in a school who don’t always stand at the front of the classroom
but whose impact is felt everywhere.

For us, one of those people is Eva.

As our Support Lead, she sees what others might miss.

She notices when something feels different.
She asks the right questions.
She listens properly.

In March, when results arrive and pressure can rise,
her role becomes even more important.

Support is not about lowering standards.

It’s about helping students meet them.

Eva helps students:

• Regain perspective
• Organise their next steps
• Manage stress
• Build resilience
• Keep going when things feel heavy

For us, Lisa is one of those people.

Yes, she is our secretary.
Yes, she keeps things running smoothly.

But she also brings something harder to measure:

Warmth.

She listens.
Properly listens.
To students.
To staff.
To families.

Her office is often a place where a student can pause, breathe, and talk.

Not because it’s her job description.

But because it’s who she is.

She offers support beyond paperwork.
Encouragement beyond logistics.
A steady presence when someone needs to be heard.

At Phoenix College Málaga, the atmosphere matters.

And people like Lisa shape it every day.

We’re very lucky to have her.
