🇬🇧 WHEN BEING GOOD AT SOMETHING BECOMES A TRAP.

Mr Mitchell has noticed something interesting over the years.

Sometimes, the students who are naturally very good at a subject are also the ones most tempted to do less work outside the classroom.

Why?

Because, for a while, they can.

They understand quickly. They get good marks. They can sometimes arrive without having done the homework and still keep up.

Until they can't.

At A Level, natural ability can give you a head start. But the subject gets deeper, the questions get harder and eventually talent needs to be backed up by something else: work, curiosity and commitment.

So Mr Mitchell's advice is simple:

Don't choose an A Level just because you've always been good at it.

Choose something you genuinely want to engage with — and then be prepared to put the work in.

Talent is a great starting point. It isn't a study strategy.

🇪🇸 CUANDO SER BUENO/A EN ALGO SE CONVIERTE EN UNA TRAMPA.

Mr Mitchell lleva años observando algo interesante.

A veces, estudiantes a quienes una asignatura se les da especialmente bien son también quienes más fácilmente caen en la tentación de trabajar menos fuera de clase.

¿Por qué?

Porque, durante un tiempo, pueden permitírselo.

Entienden rápido. Sacan buenas notas. Incluso pueden llegar algún día sin haber hecho los deberes y seguir el ritmo.

Hasta que dejan de poder hacerlo.

En A Level, la facilidad natural puede darte ventaja al principio. Pero la materia se hace más profunda, las preguntas más difíciles y llega un momento en que el talento necesita algo más: trabajo, curiosidad y compromiso.

Por eso, el consejo de Mr Mitchell es sencillo:

No elijas un A Level solo porque siempre se te haya dado bien.

Elige algo con lo que realmente quieras implicarte y después, prepárate para trabajar.

El talento es un magnífico punto de partida. No es un método de estudio.

🇬🇧 SCIENCE ISN’T JUST SOMETHING YOU LEARN. IT’S SOMETHING YOU DO. 🔬

What happens if we change one variable?
How can we test an idea?
What do the results actually tell us?
And what if they aren't what we expected?

That is the scientific method and it is a fundamental part of how our students learn science at Phoenix.

In the laboratory, Biology, Chemistry and Physics become more than information in a textbook. Students learn to observe, ask questions, form hypotheses, design experiments, measure, analyse results and draw conclusions.

And sometimes, importantly, to go back and try again.

Because science isn't about knowing the answer before you begin. It's about learning how to find out.

That's why practical work is such an important part of science at Phoenix.

Don't just learn the science. Think like a scientist.

¿Qué ocurre si cambiamos una variable?
¿Cómo podemos poner a prueba una idea?

Ese es el método científico, y es una parte fundamental de cómo nuestros y nuestras estudiantes aprenden ciencias en Phoenix.

🇬🇧 WHAT IF GETTING IT WRONG IS PART OF GETTING IT RIGHT?

A wrong answer.
An essay that comes back covered in comments.
A Maths problem that simply refuses to work.

None of these feels particularly good.

But learning isn't about getting everything right the first time. It's about trying, getting stuck, asking why, changing your approach — and trying again.

And perhaps that's one of the advantages of learning in a small class: there's nowhere to hide your mistakes. But there's no need to hide them either.

Your teacher can see where you're struggling, you can ask the question, and the mistake becomes part of the conversation.

At Phoenix, we don't expect students to know everything.

We expect them to be willing to learn.

Una respuesta incorrecta.
Un trabajo que vuelve lleno de comentarios.
Un problema de Matemáticas que, simplemente, no sale.

Nada de eso resulta especialmente agradable.

Pero aprender no consiste en hacerlo todo bien a la primera. Consiste en intentarlo, atascarte, preguntarte por qué, cambiar de enfoque… y volver a intentarlo.

Y quizá esa sea una de las ventajas de aprender en una clase pequeña: no hay dónde esconder los errores. Pero tampoco hay ninguna necesidad de esconderlos.

Tu profe puede ver dónde te estás atascando, tú puedes preguntar y el error pasa a formar parte de la conversación.

En Phoenix no esperamos que nuestros estudiantes lo sepan todo.

🇬🇧 WE HAVE A STUDENT ID! 🎉🌍

Until now, Phoenix students haven't had a student ID card.

That's about to change.

And we're not starting with just any card. Following our recent meeting with ISIC, we're delighted to announce that Phoenix students will be getting the ISIC (International Student Identity Card).

ISIC is internationally recognised and gives students access to a huge range of benefits and discounts around the world, from travel and transport to culture, food, technology, learning and entertainment.

So, for the first time, our students will have an official student ID and one they can use far beyond Phoenix.

One card. Thousands of benefits. A whole world beyond College. 💙

🇪🇸 ¡YA TENEMOS CARNÉ DE ESTUDIANTE! 🎉🌍

Hasta ahora, nuestros alumnos y alumnas no tenían un carné de estudiante Phoenix.

Eso está a punto de cambiar.

🇬🇧 WHAT IF DIFFICULT IS PART OF THE FUN?

There’s something strangely satisfying about doing something you weren’t sure you could do.

Understanding the topic that made absolutely no sense at first.
Solving the problem you got wrong three times.
Finishing the essay you didn’t know how to start.
Getting the grade that once felt just out of reach.

Not because struggling is fun.

But because overcoming something is.

At Phoenix, we don’t think challenge is something students should avoid. Nor do we think learning needs to feel like a constant struggle.

We want students to experience that sweet spot: something difficult enough to stretch you, but possible enough to make you want to try.

Because every time you get past one of those obstacles, something changes.

You know a little more.
You can do a little more.
And perhaps most importantly, you have evidence that you can do hard things.

Sometimes the obstacle isn't standing in the way.

Sometimes the obstacle is the way.

🇪🇸 ¿Y SI LO DIFÍCIL FUERA PARTE DE LA DIVERSIÓN?

Hay algo especialmente satisfactorio en conseguir algo que no estabas del todo seguro o segura de poder hacer.

Entender ese tema que al principio no tenía ningún sentido. Resolver el problema que te salió mal tres veces. Terminar el ensayo que no sabías cómo empezar. Conseguir esa nota que parecía estar fuera de tu alcance.

No porque pasarlo mal sea divertido.

Sino porque superar algo sí lo es.

En Phoenix no creemos que haya que evitar los retos. Tampoco que aprender deba convertirse en una lucha constante.

Buscamos ese punto en el que algo te exige lo suficiente para hacerte crecer, pero está lo bastante a tu alcance para que quieras intentarlo.

Porque cada obstáculo que superas deja algo detrás: sabes un poco más, puedes hacer un poco más y, sobre todo, tienes una nueva prueba de que eres capaz de hacer cosas difíciles.

🇬🇧 THIS IS THE KIND OF THING WE DO AT PHOENIX.

When our new Year 12 students arrive, we don’t just give them a timetable and show them their classrooms.

This year, one of their first activities was a scavenger hunt through Málaga’s historic centre.

Maps and clues in hand, students from different backgrounds explored the streets, solved challenges together and, almost without realising it, started getting to know each other.

It’s a simple activity. But there’s a reason behind it.

Starting Sixth Form means new classmates, new routines and, for some students, a new city or even a new country. So we create opportunities to talk, laugh, collaborate and begin finding your place in the group.

This is the kind of thing we do at Phoenix: small experiences that help turn a group of students into a community.

And when your College is in the heart of Málaga, the city itself becomes part of the experience. 💙

🇪🇸 ESTE ES EL TIPO DE COSAS QUE HACEMOS EN PHOENIX.

Cuando llegan nuestros/as nuevos Year 12, no nos limitamos a darles un horario y enseñarles las aulas.

Una de sus primeras actividades este curso fue una gymkhana por el centro histórico de Málaga.

Con mapas y pistas, estudiantes de distintos orígenes recorrieron las calles, resolvieron retos juntos y, casi sin darse cuenta, empezaron a conocerse.

Es una actividad sencilla, pero tiene un propósito.

Empezar Sixth Form significa nuevos compañeros y compañeras, nuevas rutinas y, a veces, una nueva ciudad o incluso un nuevo país. Por eso buscamos oportunidades para hablar, reír, colaborar y empezar a encontrar tu sitio.

Porque también esto es Phoenix: pequeñas experiencias que ayudan a convertir un grupo de estudiantes en una comunidad.

Y estando en pleno centro, Málaga también forma parte de la experiencia. 💙

🇬🇧 WHAT IF WE STOPPED TALKING ABOUT EFFORT?

We talk a lot in education about the importance of working hard.

And yes, A Levels require commitment. There are deadlines, difficult topics, revision and days when you simply have to get on with it.

But at Phoenix, we'd rather start somewhere else.

Curiosity. Interest. Talent.

Because something changes when you find a subject that genuinely interests you. When a teacher makes you want to understand more. When you discover that you're good at something or that you could become good at it.

You stop learning simply because someone tells you to.

You start wanting to know.

That's why we encourage our students to discover their natural talents, ask questions, go deeper and choose subjects they can genuinely engage with.

Effort still matters.

But perhaps the most powerful kind of effort is the one that doesn't always feel like effort.

Because you're interested. Because it matters to you.

Because you want to see how far you can go.

🇪🇸 ¿Y SI DEJÁRAMOS DE HABLAR TANTO DE ESFUERZO?

En educación hablamos mucho de la importancia de esforzarse.

Y sí, los A Levels exigen compromiso. Hay entregas, temas difíciles, exámenes y días en los que sencillamente hay que ponerse a trabajar.

Pero en Phoenix preferimos empezar por otro sitio.

Curiosidad. Interés. Talento.

Porque algo cambia cuando encuentras una materia que realmente te interesa. Cuando un profesor o profesora despierta tus ganas de entender más. Cuando descubres que algo se te da bien o que podría llegar a dársete muy bien.

Dejas de aprender simplemente porque alguien te lo exige.

Empiezas a querer saber.

Por eso intentamos que nuestros y nuestras estudiantes descubran sus talentos naturales, hagan preguntas, profundicen y encuentren materias con las que realmente conecten.

El esfuerzo sigue siendo necesario.

Pero quizá el esfuerzo más poderoso sea precisamente aquel que no siempre se siente como esfuerzo.

Porque te interesa. Porque te importa.

Porque quieres descubrir hasta dónde puedes llegar.

🇬🇧 UNIVERSITY PREPARATION IS ABOUT MORE THAN APPLYING.

What will accommodation be like? How do you write a strong personal statement? What if you want to study abroad? How do you choose the right university in the first place?

These are some of the questions our students recently explored through the Unifrog International University Fair.

With more than 30 universities represented and 18 live sessions, students could choose the talks most relevant to their plans: from studying in different countries to scholarships, selective universities, business, the arts and life away from home.

Our teachers also made space for the Fair within the College day. Fiona McKernan, for example, incorporated a session on university accommodation into a lesson after her students expressed an interest in it.

At Phoenix, preparing for what comes next isn't something that happens once a year in a careers meeting. Exploring possibilities, asking questions and making informed decisions are part of College life.

Choosing a university matters. Feeling ready to go there does too.

🇪🇸 PREPARARSE PARA LA UNIVERSIDAD ES MUCHO MÁS QUE SOLICITAR PLAZA.

¿Cómo será el alojamiento? ¿Cómo preparar un buen personal statement? ¿Dónde estudiar? ¿Cómo elegir universidad?

Nuestros/as estudiantes pudieron explorar estas y otras cuestiones en la International University Fair de Unifrog, con más de 30 universidades y 18 sesiones en directo.

Además, nuestro profesorado integró esta oportunidad en la jornada académica. Fiona McKernan, por ejemplo, dedicó parte de una clase a una sesión sobre alojamiento universitario, un tema que interesaba a sus estudiantes.

En Phoenix, prepararse para lo que viene después no se limita a una reunión de orientación. Explorar posibilidades, hacer preguntas y tomar decisiones informadas forma parte de la vida del College.

Elegir universidad importa. Sentirte preparado/a para llegar a ella también.

🇬🇧 WHAT’S STOPPING YOU?

“I want more freedom, not another school controlling everything I do.”

Good. Because at 16, you probably need more freedom.

In one or two years, you may be at university. No one will be checking where you are every minute, telling you when to study or organising your day for you.

So why wait until then to learn how to handle independence?

At Phoenix, Sixth Form feels different.

No uniform. Free periods you learn to manage yourself. The freedom to leave College between lessons, grab lunch in Málaga, study somewhere else and make decisions about how you use your time.

But freedom comes with something else: responsibility.

You still have lessons to attend, work to complete, deadlines to meet and A Levels to prepare for. And your teachers are close enough to notice if that freedom isn't working for you yet.

That's the point.

Phoenix doesn't postpone independence until university.

It gives you two years to practise it.

So if more freedom is what you're looking for, perhaps Phoenix isn't the school you're trying to escape from.

It might be the next step you're looking for.

🇪🇸 ¿QUÉ TE FRENA?

Bien. Porque con 16 años probablemente necesitas más libertad.

Dentro de uno o dos años puedes estar en la universidad. Nadie va a organizarte el día ni a decirte constantemente cuándo tienes que estudiar.

¿Por qué esperar hasta entonces para aprender a gestionar tu independencia?

En Phoenix no hay uniforme, aprendes a organizar tus free periods, puedes salir entre clases, comer por el centro de Málaga y decidir cómo utilizar parte de tu tiempo.

Pero esa libertad viene acompañada de algo: responsabilidad.

Sigues teniendo clases, trabajo, plazos y A Levels que preparar. Y tus profes están lo suficientemente cerca como para darse cuenta si todavía necesitas ayuda para gestionar esa libertad.

Ese es precisamente el objetivo.

Phoenix no pospone la independencia hasta la universidad. Te da dos años para practicarla.

🇬🇧 WHAT’S STOPPING YOU?

“Classes with only 3 or 4 people? That sounds boring.”

We get why you might think that.

If you're used to classrooms with 20 or 25 students, walking into a class with just a handful of people feels very different.

There’s less noise. Fewer distractions. No hiding at the back while the teacher tries to keep track of everyone.

And yes: your teacher will notice whether you understand.

They’ll also notice when you don’t.

You can ask questions. Have actual discussions. Get involved. And receive the kind of attention that becomes almost impossible when one teacher is trying to look after 25 students at once.

Does that mean you can't laugh, talk or enjoy the class?

Of course not.

Small doesn't mean boring.

It means that when you're in class, you can actually learn better and still enjoy being there.

At 16, perhaps that's not such a bad trade-off.

So… what if a class of 3 or 4 isn't something to worry about?

What if it's one of the best things about Phoenix?

🇪🇸 ¿QUÉ TE FRENA?

«¿Clases de solo 3 o 4 personas? Suena aburrido».

Entendemos que puedas pensarlo.

Si estás acostumbrado/a a clases de 20 o 25 alumnos, entrar en un aula con solo unas pocas personas es muy diferente.

Hay menos ruido. Menos distracciones. Y tampoco puedes desaparecer al fondo mientras el profesor o la profesora intenta estar pendiente de todo el mundo.

Tu profe sabe si lo estás entendiendo.

Y también si no.

Puedes preguntar, participar, debatir y recibir una atención que resulta casi imposible cuando un profesor tiene que atender a 25 estudiantes a la vez.

¿Significa eso que no podéis reíros o pasarlo bien en clase?

Claro que no.

Small doesn't mean boring.

Significa que puedes aprender mejor y seguir disfrutando de tus clases.

¿Y si una clase de 3 o 4 no fuera algo que temer de Phoenix, sino una de las mejores razones para elegirlo?
