PROUD TUTOR - Very proud of my tuition student ‘M’ who has worked incredibly hard and achieved high assessment results this Spring!

When you’re working with a student who has high scores, the job shifts from remediation to intellectual partnership. You aren’t just teaching the student content or tutoring ‘to pass the test’; you’re helping them navigate the “Why” Behind the “How”.
Such students often aren’t satisfied with just getting the right answer; they want to see the underlying logic; to make higher connections.

Pace can also change - You have the freedom to move at the speed of their curiosity rather than the speed of a curriculum; or in this case, to prepare them for grammar school entrance exams...

It’s less about being a traditional tutor/teacher and more like being a guide - you’re there to help them find their limits and then push past them.

In addition, high achievers like M can sometimes be afraid of being wrong. They are so used to getting high grades, that my job is to facilitate risk-taking and show them that failure is also part of learning. This comes down to developing a bond, to understanding your student and building their confidence... Therefore, tutoring lessons become a safe space to fail, to experiment, and to tackle problems where the solution isn’t immediately obvious.

Did I mention that I love my job??? 😍

HAPPY HOLIDAYS - Ms Graham Tuition
Yesterday saw the end of another academic term with a very busy week in school and lots of excited children - with this also ends our tuition lessons for 2025.

Lessons resume from the week beginning 5th January 2026.

SUMMER LEARNING LOSS - how to avoid it

Summer Learning Loss is a well-researched, well-established phenomenon: when young learners go on summer vacation for ~10 weeks each summer, they lose some of their learning gains from the prior school year. While studies may vary a bit on the extent of the loss or how they quantify it, they generally reach the same conclusions: students lose a nonnegligible amount of what they’ve learned to date, and that loss is more substantial in math than in reading.

That difference between math and reading helps to exemplify the real core of learning loss which is essentially just this: use it, or lose it.

When children aren’t using their academic skills, those skills start to atrophy: the brain is a muscle, after all. Children aren’t using the core, muscle-memory skills of math and reading as readily as they do during the year, and to the extent that they do read or work with numbers they’re not doing it with the same rigor and intentionality of academic progression, so those gains start to erode until the focus is back.

During the summer weeks when children are relaxed it is the ideal opportunity for learning to embed - children who are relaxed and enjoying lessons are more open to learning 👌🏻

👉🏼 Did you know that the summer is also the ideal opportunity for your child to get ready for their new school year ahead or even their new school if they are transitioning to secondary education… it’s also the ideal opportunity to prepare for 11+ entrance exams and brush up on areas of weakness.
