A flight path can look surprisingly curved or indirect when displayed on a traditional flat map, but that appearance is largely caused by the way our three dimensional planet is projected onto a two-dimensional surface. Map projections can visually distort shapes, distances, and directions, making an efficient route appear much longer or more unusual than it actually is.
In reality, aircraft often follow routes that closely approximate great-circle paths. On a spherical Earth, these routes represent some of the shortest possible paths between two locations, which is why flight paths may bend across maps rather than appearing as perfectly straight lines. What looks like a detour on a flat map can therefore be a highly efficient route around the globe.
This is a fascinating reminder that maps are representations rather than perfect copies of Earth's geometry. The same journey can look dramatically different depending on the projection being used, while the actual aircraft route remains a practical path across the curved surface of the planet. The Lost Continent Beneath the South Pacific Was Never Truly Missing — Scientists Finally Mapped Zealandia
Earth may have a “hidden” continent beneath the South Pacific. Known as Zealandia (Te Riu-a-Māui), this enormous geological region covers about 4.9 million km², yet roughly 94% of it lies underwater. New Zealand and New Caledonia are among its most visible portions.
Zealandia isn't simply a collection of submerged islands. Geological and geophysical evidence—including rock samples, seismic data, gravity measurements and magnetic patterns—shows that much of the region consists of thick, relatively buoyant continental crust with a coherent geological history. Its crust was stretched and fragmented as it separated from the ancient supercontinent Gondwana roughly 85–105 million years ago.
The fascinating part is that “continent” has no single worldwide official definition, so Zealandia isn't universally counted as an “eighth continent” on school maps. But geologically, scientists have strong evidence for treating it as a continent-sized body. In other words, the continent wasn't newly discovered—it was hidden beneath the ocean, waiting for geology to reveal it.

A new study suggests that Earth is warming at a faster rate than ever recorded, raising concerns about the growing effects of climate change. Researchers found that the rate of global warming has nearly doubled in recent years after accounting for natural influences such as El Niño, volcanic activity and changes in solar cycles.
According to the study, global temperatures increased at a rate of less than 0.2°C per decade between 1970 and 2015. However, during the most recent 10-year period, the warming rate rose to around 0.35°C per decade. Researchers say this is the fastest sustained rate observed since modern global temperature records began in 1880.
Scientists involved in the research warned that if this faster warming continues, the world could move beyond the 1.5°C long-term warming limit set under the Paris Agreement much sooner than previously expected. Some temperature datasets suggest that this threshold could be crossed as early as 2026, while others point to 2028 or 2029.
The researchers examined five major global temperature datasets and used methods designed to separate human-driven warming from temporary natural variations. Their analysis found that an acceleration in warming became noticeable around 2013 or 2014.
However, scientists stressed that the recent acceleration may not necessarily continue at the same pace. Natural climate variations can temporarily increase or decrease global temperatures, meaning several more years of observations will be needed to determine whether the faster warming represents a permanent shift.
Human activities remain the main driver of long-term warming. The buildup of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere has already raised global temperatures by roughly 1.4°C compared with pre-industrial levels. A decline in certain cooling pollutants has also contributed to the recent rise in temperatures.
The consequences are becoming increasingly visible around the world. Rising temperatures can intensify heatwaves, increase the likelihood of extreme rainfall, worsen droughts and place additional pressure on ecosystems and communities. Scientists are also concerned that continued warming could push important climate systems toward risky tipping points.
The past three years have been identified as the hottest three-year period on record, highlighting the rapid pace of planetary warming. Researchers say the future will depend heavily on how quickly countries reduce carbon emissions.
Despite the alarming findings, scientists emphasise that the situation is not hopeless. Cutting emissions, expanding renewable energy, improving energy efficiency and preparing cities and infrastructure for extreme weather could reduce future damage.
Experts say every fraction of a degree of warming avoided matters. The study therefore serves as another warning that faster action is needed to slow global warming and protect people, ecosystems and future generations.
