I’m Kate, and I’m a British English accent coach. Here’s a quick breakdown of how American and British pronunciation of these words differ:

1. Anonymous⬇️
🇬🇧/əˈnɒnɪməs/ 🇺🇸/əˈnɑːnəməs/

2. Statistics ⬇️
Same for both /stəˈtɪstɪks/

3. Infrastructure ⬇️
The difference is in the final /r/

4. Significantly
Same for both / sɪɡˈnɪfɪkəntli/

I’ve been asked this question a lot! The concept of intonation and rhythm overlaps sometimes, so it’s normal that sorting it out in your head can feel complicated.

However, if we simplify it, intonation is about placing stress and moving tone, while rhythm is about creating contrast between stressed/weak syllables in pitch, volume and length.

By the way, I’m thinking about running a workshop on intonation. Who’s in? It won’t be free, but the price will be symbolic 🫶🏻

In the video, she “fixes” my /ɪ/ in ‘immediate’ and changes it to the sound schwa /ə/ (‘uh-mmediate’). However, both versions are correct⤵️

These two vowels are most commonly used in weak syllables, and while dictionaries may show only one option, in a natural flow of speech, they can sometimes be interchangeable! So you can say both, /ɪˈmiːdiət/ and /əˈmiːdiət/ in Standard Southern British accent😁
