The difficulties blended families may encounter are not caused by a lack of love.
They are connected to non-visible systemic realities that are overlooked.

Through thousands of Family Constellations carried out over decades by Bert Hellinger and by her disciple Brigitte Champetier de Ribes, certain Forces of Love repeatedly reveal themselves as fundamental to harmony in our life and relationships. For example:

• The Force of Hierarchy, or Order of Precedence:
- Those individuals who came earlier have a precedence and need to be respected by those who came later.
- Ex partners need to be respected –our own as much as the biological parents of step children.
- And the children from previous relationships have a precedence over the step parent, who will need to respect the time their biological parent devotes to them.
- The new system, however, has a precedence over the old system. When one of the members of the couple has a child from an extramarital relationship, a new system is created which needs to be acknowledged and given precedence, while hiding it will bring about serious consequences for all.

When each person is given their rightful place, family life becomes lighter and more harmonious.

• The Force of Compensation: The balance that leads to harmony and makes happiness possible in the blended family requires the step partner to match the time his/her partner devotes to his or her biological children with a similar amount of time for herself.
