Today is Liberation Day (Bevrijdingsdag) in the Netherlands. Bevrijdingsdag follows the Remembrance of the Dead on the 4th of May and marks the end of the German occupation of the Netherlands during the Second World War.

On the 4th of May, we commemorate all civilians and members of the Dutch armed forces who have died in wars or peacekeeping missions since the Second World War. The next day, on the 5th of May, we celebrate the freedom we have and reflect on the values of democracy, freedom, and human rights. Many activities, such as the large festivals (bevrijdingsfestivals) and the 5 May Concert, are also organised on this day to celebrate our freedom.

This day allows us to cherish and reflect on the freedom we have 🇳🇱
