Annual Awards Ceremony to celebrate NLP making a difference in society - a black tie charity dinner raising money for charity

Well a special day is upon us. Well I should say, me! A component of the International Neuro-linguistic Programming (NLP) Conference 2017, being held in London this weekend, is the NLP Awards 2017 ceremony. The ceremony is being held this evening (29th April 2017). I was extremely fortunate and privileged to be nominated for the ‘Education’ category in these awards by Laurianne Mitton. Laurianne kindly noted my contribution to education through the use of NLP in both learning and pastoral contexts. I have successfully supported senior leaders, prospective leaders, middle managers, students and individual clients using an NLP coaching philosophy. I would like to thank all those who have contributed to my success over the years either as academics, educationalists, clients or as coaches. I also wish to thank and acknowledge the massive contribution of my wife, Sue, who has been “the winds beneath my wings”. Finally, I wish to congratulate all those who have been nominated for an award this evening; not only award winners and nominees, but all those who successfully utilise NLP to support and guide ‘clients’ in their time of need.

I am humbled and honoured to be nominated and successfully achieve the status of ‘Finalist’ (NLP in Education) in the NLP Awards 2017. My sincere thanks to a wonderful colleague, Laurianne Mitton, for nominating me and enabling me to celebrate my contribution to education via NLP coaching and teaching techniques. A range of awards celebrating the value of NLP across various professional fields are to be presented at the International NLP Conference 2017 in London. The conference runs from 28th- 30th April 2017. Contact 020 3051 6740 or view www.anlp.org for further details and booking information.

The review of the following study provides some evidence that “it’s important to talk”. Talking therapies have sometimes been viewed with a degree of scepticism. This study provides another lens through which to consider and understand the importance of talking (and being heard). See what you think.

King's College London - Study reveals for first time that talking therapy changes the brain's wiring
A new study from King's College London and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has shown for the first time that cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) strengthens specific connections in the brains of people with psychosis, and that these stronger connections are associated with long-term red...

In the latter part of my teaching career I was one of many teachers who were ‘directed’ to subscribe to the educational philosophy of the growth mindset. However, I was a little concerned by the way our SLT appeared to selectively embrace Dweck’s principles and philosophies. The following article, presents an interview with Dweck in which she highlights her concerns about how her model for learning has been interpreted. Dweck help us examine how selective subscription to her ideas may lead ‘false growth mindset’. Really worth a read!

Are you lost in the world today?
A brilliant animation that will generate interest amongst students who are sociologists (mass media; culture and identity) and psychologists (human relationships; addiction; learned behaviour). No matter what you study, this is well worth a watch.

An interesting review of meeting the learning needs of children.
Too much too soon? What should we be teaching four-year-olds
New research shows that children who start school young are struggling to keep up with curriculum targets.

How about this then for all you teachers (and managers) out there.
It's official: your school's marking policy is probably wrong
Ofsted is once again trying to bust the myth that extensive marking is best for students. When will the message get through?

The co-founder of neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) speaks here of his vision for learning and the education system. This coincides with the publication of his new book ‘Teaching Excellence’ co-authored by Kate Benson. Well worth taking the time to watch and reflect on the content whether you are a learner, teacher, or institutional manager.

The psychological and sociological approach to understanding addictive behaviours has tended to focus on the neurology issues of individuals with some reference to the impact of the social environment of the addict. The following provides an interesting overview of addiction with greater emphasis on the social. This could prove to be an alternative explanation for A level or undergraduate students of Psychology and Sociology. Have a look………, it’s an interesting theory. Special thanks to Eileen for directing me to this.

If you've been a teacher, or indeed were or are a student, you will have experienced a range of models designed to assess progress with learning. These have included Assessment for Learning (AfL); Assessment of Learning (AoL); Assessment Levels and 'levelling'. With the introduction of the new English curriculum (2014) and associated examinations a new form of assessment is being implemented. The following article serves to draw attention to important aspects of this new assessment model and is recommended reading for both teachers, trainee teachers and students. See what you think.

Although some three years old the following still resonates today. Moreover, these sentiments do not simply apply to America. I urge you to watch the whole clip and reflect upon the content.
