What if we’ve been starting in the wrong place?

When a child is overwhelmed, angry, anxious, restless, silly, shut down or simply full, our instinct is often:

“Calm down.”

But what if we helped them become curious instead?

What is happening in my body?
What am I noticing?
What might I need?

In The Breathing Space, children enter the world of Fenn, Willow and the Breathing Space Crew and explore those questions through stories, characters, movement, creativity and adventure.

Some children don’t explode.

They don’t shout.
They don’t throw things.
They don’t always look like they’re struggling.

They go quiet.

They say “I’m fine.”
They stop letting you in.
They disappear into screens.
They become “easy.”

But easy isn’t always calm.

Sometimes the child who worries us most isn’t the loud one.
Sometimes it’s the child carrying what they can’t explain.

At The Breathing Space Project, we help children understand themselves through:

Connect. Move. Breathe. Notice.

Because children don’t need to be forced into calm.
They need safe ways to come back to themselves.

Sometimes children don’t have the words for what’s happening inside.

So it comes out as:

“I don’t know.”
Anger over tiny things.
Not listening.
Boredom.
Screen-seeking.
Meltdowns.
Shutdowns.

It can look like defiance from the outside…
but underneath, their body may be overwhelmed.

Before more instructions, reminders or consequences, sometimes children need regulation first:

movement, connection, pressure, breath, safety, and time.

That’s what we explore inside The Breathing Space Project — gentle, child-friendly tools to help children connect, move, breathe and notice.

Sometimes the anger isn’t the problem.
Sometimes the anger is the message.

Children don’t always have the words for “I’m overloaded,” “I feel out of control,” or “my body doesn’t feel safe right now.”

So before we demand calm, we can offer pressure, movement, connection and breath.

That’s what Momo Move helps children discover:
their body can feel big feelings… and still find its way back. Follow for more ways to connect, move, breathe and notice www.thebreathingspaceproject.com

Children don't always need us to have the perfect words.

Sometimes they don't need another breathing exercise.
They don't need another distraction.
They don't need us to fix the feeling.

Sometimes...

they simply need someone who stays.

Someone who sits beside them without rushing.

Someone who helps them feel safe enough to find their own calm.

Children learn emotional regulation through connection long before they can do it on their own.

Your calm becomes their calm.

Your presence becomes their safety.

And from that safe place...

the breathing,
the thinking,
and the learning can begin.

💛 Sometimes the most powerful regulation tool isn't something we do.

It's simply choosing to stay.

I thought I was building self-regulation classes for children.

But somewhere along the way, it became something much deeper.

The Breathing Space Project became a story-led world where children learn to understand themselves from the inside out — through connection, movement, breath, creativity and noticing.

Not to force children to calm down.

But to help them become curious about the clues their bodies, thoughts and feelings are already giving them…

and to notice the Quiet Place that has been within them all along.

🌿 The new website is now live.

🦊 Summer Online Adventures are opening soon for children aged 6–9.

You might notice something you’ve never thought about before…

Most parents are never told this:

How a child breathes
can influence how they feel, focus and regulate emotions.

Many children develop shallow or mouth breathing patterns
without anyone noticing.

The good news?

Breathing is a skill.

And it can be taught gently through:
• movement
• body awareness
• simple breath patterns

This is the foundation of The Breathing Space Project.

Because calm is not something we demand from children.

It’s something we help them build.

If this made you think, save it for later.
It might help more than you realise.
