Both of our holiday rentals were booked over a year in advance by eclipse hunters coming from France and the UK. Too early for us to even have to wrestle with our conscience about the possibility of dynamic pricing and giving us plenty of time to worry about whether the skies would be clear at 20:28 on the 12th August 2026.
As it turned out, we needn’t have worried at all. Both sets of guests got to enjoy spectacular, unimpeded views of the full eclipse. An experience that will live with them forever. One guest was kind enough to share this spectacular photo of his showing the whole process of the eclipse, which will now be joining the wall art in the rental where he was staying. The second shot is one of ours. (The royal we - it’s actually Richie’s 🤣)

About last night.

The eclipse that everyone had been waiting for. And, in true Asturian fashion, as the evening approached clouds closed in on the coast and wrapped themselves as far inland as Oviedo. You don’t get the joys of a gentle maritime climate without a side of instability.

But the other thing about Asturias is that you do get options. There’s always the next valley along with a different microclimate or high peaks perched above low cloud. We ourselves had been keeping an eye on the forecast and were poised for a dash over the mountain tops into neighbouring León if necessary. In the end, we got lucky and our little corner of the mountains had perfect clear skies to enjoy the total eclipse completely.

Our good friends who live nearby generously hosted a viewing party in their fabulous back garden which has the most panoramic of views that lent themselves perfectly to the occasion. Good company, an excellent spread of homegrown produce and a celestial spectacle. You really couldn’t ask for more!

It was made all the more special to me as we reminisced about the first time I had sat down with our hosts at this table, looking out at those breathtaking views, some seven years ago. That was also the first time they had set foot in that garden (more a cow field back then to be fair) and the first time they had seen those views. I will never forget the look on their faces as they took in the grandeur of those mountain views. I knew then and there that I’d made a sale.

If you are moving to Asturias with children then schooling will be high up your list of priorities. The good news is that there is an excellent range of options available to suit diverse needs and preferences.
The Escuela Rural in Oles, Villaviciosa is a wonderful public option with a truly bilingual and multicultural environment and child-centred approach.
