I also work as a freelance interpreter helping people at the town-hall, hospital appointments, dealing with the local authorities, etc.. I have worked for 5 years teaching English customer service in a Trade union to unemployed people, this courses were government funded. My teaching approach is very simple but effective, first I teach a bit of grammar ( grammar is like foundations in a house, without them the house would collapse...) and then we practice the grammar by talking and talking. If you only learn sentences you don´t really know how the senteces are made or how to make new ones. Because I live in Spain I can only give you online lessons but learning from the comfort of your house will give you more condifence and freedom.
