Lunchroom English Project For English ( ) learners - motivating topics of conversation and grammar tips Unlock your English fluency! Let's unlock your English!

My name is Lynne Friedman and I run Lunchroom English Project. I am an English fluency coach who helps adult professionals and entrepreneurs struggling with their spoken English. Do you write emails daily in English, but PANIC when you have to speak on the phone or make a presentation? I know what that's like... I faced the same challenges when learning Spanish, the feeling of being blocked when I

had to phone for an appointment, explain a problem, or communicate my ideas. With more than 25 years of ESL teaching and training on 3 continents (I lived in the USA, Japan, and now Spain), I've developed a methodology that has helped hundreds of clients convert their fear into confidence and break through language barriers. I'll teach you my "short-cuts" to spoken English so that you can get that promotion, sail through that interview, or close that deal! If you need support to “UNLOCK” your English abilities, or are interested in collaborating with me, let's connect. For a free 30-minute discovery call, send a DM to reserve your spot. Read about Sobrino de Botin's, the oldest restaurant in the world (literally!), located here in Madrid, Spain.

It's always interesting for Spaniards and people who have lived in Spain for a long time, to see what visitors say about the local gems.

Here's a challenge: After reading the article, can you find the name of the famous author who used to dine here and mentioned it in his novels? Write your answer in the comments!

🌶️🥘🌶️🥘🌶️🥘

́s

Sobrino de Botín has survived invasions, civil war, and global pandemics without ever closing its doors.

As I wind down for the Christmas break, I am reflecting on the past year and the year to come.

It has been busy, with good and bad, but there is so much to be grateful for, including all of you, my clients, friends, colleagues, mentors and mentees.

My wish for the new year? Let's focus on an ideal world that we can all create together, each in our own way. ❤️

Mientras voy bajando el ritmo para las vacaciones de Navidad, reflexiono sobre el año que termina y el que está por venir.

Ha sido un año intenso, con momentos buenos y otros no tanto, pero hay muchísimo por lo que estar agradecida, entre ellos, todos vosotros: mis clientes, amigos, colegas, mentores y personas a las que acompaño como mentora.

¿Mi deseo para el año nuevo? Que pongamos el foco en un mundo ideal que podamos crear juntos, cada uno a su manera. ❤️

Do you feel unsure about when to use SAY or TELL in English? You’re not alone!

This question came up in a session recently, and it still works like a charm for explaining this tricky grammar point.

Here’s a quick guide:

With the verb TELL, the person in the sentence immediately follows the word TELL.
Formula: TELL (someone) (something)
💠 Tell Paul to call me tomorrow.
💠 They told us to stay at the hotel.

With the verb SAY, the pattern is different:
Formula: SAY (something) TO (someone)
💠 Nancy said a bad word to her teacher.
💠 Mr. Troy said that he would bring the report.

Which is correct in the examples below?
- Please say me your name. OR Please tell me your name.
- Your boss said me to attend the meeting. OR Your boss told me to attend the meeting.
- We tell “hello” to them every morning. OR We say “hello” to them every morning.
- The weatherman told that it was going to rain. OR The weatherman said that it was going to rain.

REMEMBER:
If you mention the person immediately after the verb, use TELL.

Exceptions (because there are always exceptions!):
These are fixed expressions:
◻️ Tell the truth
◻️ Tell a lie
◻️ Tell a joke
◻️ Tell a story
◻️ Say a prayer

Did this make SAY vs. TELL clearer? Share your thoughts or examples in the comments below. If you need extra help with your English , send me a DM!

So many learners have said to me, "Yesterday I ENJOYED a lot!" (Wrong!)❌

There is a lot of confusion about how to express in English.

People mix up FUN and FUNNY, too.

I put together this carrousel to clear things up.

I hope you ENJOY it! 🤩🤩

_________________________

Tantos alumnos de me han dicho, "Ayer divertí mucho!" (¡Incorrecto!)❌

Hay bastante confusión sobre cómo expresar la en inglés.

La gente se equivoca mucho con FUN y FUNNY, también.

Hice este carrusel para clarificar todo esto.

¡Espero que lo DISFRUTES! 🤩🤩

How do you ... “el fin de semana que viene” into English❓

Spanish learners often translate it directly into:
🚩 “THE NEXT weekend”

However, native speakers would say:
🚩 “NEXT weekend” (without the THE, meaning the weekend after the current week, in a few days)
🚩 Example: NEXT weekend, we are going to have a party.

Why❓ Because “THE NEXT weekend” is used to indicate the weekend *𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞*.
Here are some examples:
🚩 David finished his project on March 20th. THE NEXT weekend, he presented it to the team. (*𝐧𝐨𝐭* the weekend at the end of this week)
🚩 NEXT weekend, I’m going to the beach. (the upcoming weekend, at the end of this week). THE NEXT weekend, I’m staying home. (the weekend after the one in the previous sentence)

You can also use this concept with other time expressions: week, month, year, century, etc.
For example:
🚩 Lauren graduated from university in 2012. THE NEXT year, she got her first job. (the year after the mentioned time)

This is the same difference as LAST [...] and THE LAST [...].
Examples:
🚩 LAST MONTH, we had a fantastic training session. (the month before the present time)
🚩 We worked on this idea for a year. THE LAST MONTH, we had a real breakthrough and were able to finish it quickly. (the month at the end of the year working on the project)

I hope I clarified this concept for you!
