How long does it take to become a pilot? ⏱️

Becoming a pilot takes time and dedication. However, the journey is worth it for those passionate about flying.

The duration of pilot training in Europe varies depending on the type of pilot license and the flight school. Typically, it takes anywhere from 12 to 24 months to complete an entire commercial pilot program. The amount of time you spend studying also depends on your financial situation, current obligations, and professional goals. If your goal is to become a private pilot and be able to fly a small plane for your personal or business purposes, then it will take much less time. Let's take a look in more detail 👇

PRIVATE PILOT COURSE ✈️

A Private Pilot license (PPL) allows the holder to fly small aircraft for non-commercial purposes. In Europe, a PPL allows the holder to fly single-engine aircraft up to a certain weight limit and carry passengers. The length of this course in Europe is determined by different factors such as the frequency of lessons, the weather conditions, and the individual's ability to learn. Generally, the course takes 3-6 months to complete.

ATPL MODULAR PROGRAM ✈️

The Airline Transport Pilot License Modular program allows pilots to obtain their ATPL license by completing the required flight hours and theoretical knowledge exams in a modular (=part-time) format. The advantages of this program include flexibility in scheduling, cost savings, and the ability to focus on specific topics. The program typically takes 14-24 months to complete, depending on the individual's pace and availability.

ATPL INTEGRATED PROGRAM ✈️

The ATPL Integrated program prepares individuals for commercial airline careers in a very structured way and on a full-time basis. Training is provided in groups and the duration varies by the training organization but typically takes around 12 months to complete.

TOP 5️⃣ Essential Rules of Thumb for Flying ⏬🐣

In aviation, ROTs are simple, easy-to-remember formulas or guidelines that help pilots make quick and effective decisions in flight. Here are 5 of them that every pilot should know:

1️⃣The 1-in-60 Rule:

A navigational technique that helps pilots estimate their course correction when off track. According to this rule, if a pilot is 1 degree off course, they will be 1 nautical mile (NM) off track after flying 60 NM. To correct the course, simply calculate the required heading change and adjust accordingly. This rule is particularly useful for visual and dead reckoning navigation. 🧭

2️⃣The 3-to-1 Descent Rule:

Determines when to begin their descent from cruising altitude. For every 1,000 feet of altitude to lose, plan to travel 3 NM horizontally. For example, if you need to descend from 9,000 feet to 3,000 feet, you should start your descent 18 NM from your destination (6,000 feet / 1,000 feet = 6; 6 x 3 = 18). 🛬

3️⃣The 50% Rule for Takeoff and Landing:

Helps pilots estimate the required runway length for takeoff and landing. According to this rule, if an aircraft uses 50% of the available runway for takeoff, it should be able to reach 70% of its takeoff speed. Similarly, if an aircraft uses 50% of the available runway for landing, it should be able to stop within the remaining 50%. This rule is useful for determining whether a runway is long enough for safe operations. 🥑

That would be awesome, isn’t it? However, the reality is a bit different - there are many pilot jobs on the market and the salary depends on your experience, employer, and other factors. Let’s take a closer look 👇

Commercial Airlines: As the backbone of the aviation industry, CA pilots are responsible for safely transporting passengers and cargo on large aircraft. European airlines such as Lufthansa, British Airways, and Air France offer numerous opportunities for pilots to fly short-haul and long-haul routes.

Low-Cost Airlines: Europe is home to several low-cost airlines, such as Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air. Pilots working for these carriers often operate short-haul flights and can quickly accumulate flying hours to advance in their careers.

How do pilots navigate through clouds? And how do they land when they can’t see the runway? 😶‍🌫️🌫️

There are several factors ensuring the safety of flight in conditions of low visibility. First, airplane control panels are equipped with instruments that help a pilot maintain control. Of course, the control panels vary depending on the aircraft type; some may feature more devices than others, including LCD screens and other useful things. However, there are 6 basic instruments that every airplane is equipped with:

⏱️AIRSPEED INDICATOR - indicates how fast the airplane is going through the air

🌅ATTITUDE INDICATOR - indicates where the horizon is

🆙ALTIMETER - indicates how high is the airplane above sea level

↪️TURN COORDINATOR - guides the pilot through a turn

↗️HEADING INDICATOR - shows the direction in which the airplane is flying

↕️VERTICAL SPEED INDICATOR - measures how fast is the airplane going up and down

The Instrument Rating course is aimed to teach pilots to use instruments to monitor and control an airplane’s position in the air. It includes a fun part, too - flight simulator sessions included in the training program. 🎮

Is flying safe? We believe so. Furthermore, aviation constantly works on evaluating and minimising potential risks and emergencies. 📉

Aviation in today's world is much safer than it was 100, 50 or even 20 years ago. Much of this has been made possible by the constant improvement of the safety management systems. The most important component of such a system when the flights are carried out are the so-called emergency checklists - a clear sequence of actions to be performed by the pilot in order to prevent the undesirable consequences of such situations. For instance, actions in case of engine failure, in case of fire, failure or abnormal operation of the aircraft electrical system, etc. The checklists are usually developed by aircraft manufacturers - this is a process of continuous upgrades that uses data from aircraft operations, as well as from accident investigations.

Interesting fact - in case of critical situations, some elements of these checklists must be done from memory without prompting hence they are called "memory items". 🧠

You never know when a situation will arise that will demand quick thinking and knowledge of procedures, but pilots are trained to always be ready for it. That is why so much attention is paid to the emergency training from the initial stage through the entire course of the pilot program - in PPL, instrument rating, multi-engine rating, and CPL modules.
