Check out this stunning SEM image of the spore bed of a common fibre vase fungus!
Each of those spiky round structures are spores, the reproductive cells of the fungus.
This species, Thelephora terrestris, forms a symbiotic relationship with the roots of trees as an ectomycorrhizal fungus. This particular specimen was found in the Northern Black Forest National Park in Germany.
The image was taken at a magnification of x2600, showing incredible detail.
