English often uses abbreviations of Latin words or phrases.

✍️ They often appear in informal writing when a lot of text has to fit into a small space.
✍️ They can make sentences easier to read.
✍️ They normally contain the first letter of each word, such as ‘a.m.’ (ante meridiem).
⚠️ However, it’s important to know when to use abbreviations.

For very formal writing, such as essays or reports, avoid using them at all. Instead, use another way of saying the same thing, e.g. ➡️ ‘for example’.
