How exalted is the level of Teshuvah! Previously, the he was separate from God, the Lord of Israel, as states: "Your sins separate between you and your God." He would call out [to God] without being answered as states: "Even if you pray many times, I will not hear." Now, he is clinging to the God as states: "And you who cling to God, your Lord." He calls out [to God] and is answered immediately as states: "Before, you will call out, I will answer."

"We are commanded to love each other as we love ourselves. I should have mercy for and love my brother as faithfully as I love and have mercy for myself. This applies to his financial and physical state, and whatever he has or desires. What I want for myself I should want for him, and whatever I don't want for myself or my friends, I shouldn't want for him. The source of this commandment is G‑d's statement: "You must love your neighbor as [you love] yourself." [The book of Mitzvot, 206]

The Feast of Weeks is the anniversary of the Revelation on Mount Sinai. In order to raise the importance of this day, we count the days that pass since the preceding festival, just as one who expects his most intimate friend on a certain day counts the days and even the hours. This is the reason why we count the days that pass since the offering of the Omer, between the anniversary of our departure from Egypt and the anniversary of the Lawgiving. The latter was the aim and object of the exodus from Egypt, and thus God said, "I brought you unto myself" (Exod. 19:4). As that great revelation took place only on one day, so we keep its anniversary only one day: but if the eating of unleavened bread on Passover were only commanded for one day, we should not have noticed it, and its object would not have been manifest. For it frequently happens that we take the same kind of food for two or three days. But by our continuing for a whole period [of seven days] to eat unleavened bread, its object becomes clear and evident. (Guide for the Perplexed, Part 3 Chapter 43)

"Anger is an exceptionally bad quality. It is fitting and proper that one move away from it and adopt the opposite extreme. One should school himself not to become angry even when it is fitting to be angry. If he wishes to teach his children or his community, if he is a communal leader, and wishes to be angry at them to motivate them to return to the proper path, he should present an angry front, but he should be inwardly calm."

All these commemorative fasts will be nullified in the Messianic era and, indeed ultimately, they will be transformed into holidays and days of rejoicing and celebration, as [Zechariah 8:19] states: "Thus declares the Lord of Hosts, 'The fast of the fourth [month], the fast of the fifth [month], the fast of the seventh [month], and the fast of the tenth [month] will be [times of] happiness and celebration and festivals for the House of Judah. And they shall love truth and peace.'

There are days when the entire Jewish people fast because of the calamities that occurred to them then, to arouse their hearts and initiate them in the paths of repentance. This will serve as a reminder of our wicked conduct and that of our ancestors, which resembles our present conduct and therefore brought these calamities upon them and upon us. By reminding ourselves of these matters, we will repent and improve our conduct, as states: "And they will confess their sin and the sin of their ancestors." [Maimonides, Mishne Torah, Ta'aniot chapter 5]

A person must drive himself to the limit and bear any hardship rather than impose on others and make himself a burden on the community. Some of the greatest sages were woodchoppers, loggers, water carriers for gardens, blacksmiths and charcoal makers. They did not ask for anything from the community, nor did they accept gifts offered to them.

Even though it is a mitzvah to rejoice on all the festivals, there was an additional celebration in the Temple on the festival of Sukkot, as [Leviticus 23:40] commands: "And you shall rejoice before God, your Lord, for seven days...The happiness with which a person should rejoice in the fulfillment of the mitzvot and the love of God who commanded them is a great service.
