In this video of the series of Climate Pills, recorded here at Architecture UIC during the workshop on Climate Design on the city of Sitges in collaboration with UCCRN EducationUCCRN Education, we chat with Pellegrino, Senior Lecturer, from GERS - Gustave Eiffel University, Head of M2 Sustainable Urban Development and member of Lab'Urba, Urban Engineering Department
Here she gives us an overview on urban infrastructure, services and flows in the city and their need to be rethought in strategic manner to better embed them in the life on inhabitants. Particular focus is also brought on the crucial time for climate transition, where it is important to anticipate actions rather than waiting.
We thank her for her time and wish to see her here soon again.

In this video of the series of Climate Pills, recorded here at Architecture UICC during the workshop on Climate Design on the city of Sitges in collaboration with UCCRN Education, we chat with Christian Valentin, emeritus soil scientist of the Institute of Research for Development, currently working at the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Sciences in Paris.
His work covers topics such as land use which are related to areas like environmental change, Erosion control and Soil management. Here he gives us an overview on the risks associated with water today, taking us to understand which are the sectors that utilises it the most and then explaining other risks involving water.

We here are publishing the great work of one of our students as part of this year thesis repot focusing on the Urban Planning and Design Ready for 2030 (UP2030) project which is co-funded under the Horizon Europe framework of the European Commission.
The aim of UP2030 is to ‘support cities in driving the socio-technical transitions required to meet their climate neutrality targets by leveraging urban planning and design’. As seen below in the figure, the 5-UP Approach provides an innovative methodology which tools and methods can be applied to specific cities and projects.
The key objective of this paper, prepared by Rose Dagg, masters student at Architecture UIC, is to undertake a benchmarking activity in relation to a tool that will be developed as part of UP2030. Take a look to know more!

In this third video of the series of Climate Pills, recorded here at Architecture UIC during the workshop on Climate Design on the city of Sitges in collaboration with UCCRN Education, Jacques Gignoux, academic researcher from École Normale Supérieure, illustrates Ecosystem Functioning methodologies and reflects on the collective life activities of plants, explaining how they work and the effects these activities have on conditioning the environment. Applying system thinking to this matter we can then translate it to cities for a better understanding, to reach climate neutrality.

Through back to Montreal, and the incredible work by our former student and now Alumni Riwa Abdul Khalek. We want to share with you and give more visibility to these reports and city collection, wishing to provide a global overview about different cities’ experience in resilience, and how this is evolving.
The series is titled “Exploring Urban Resilience Pathways” and each report was prepared by a student of our Int. Msc. City Resilience Design and Management ( and Architecture UIC) during their time here at the master, the first semester, as a learning outcome of the acquired analytical skills – to find, understand, organize and communicate different perspectives, approaches and models of urban resilience implementation in a determined city.

In this video Gerald Mills, physical geographer based at University College of Dublin gives an overview on cities and global climate change, urban climate and urban heat islands, the way they form and its consequences.
Him and his expertise helped us developed here at Architecture UIC a framework for heat resilience, and an integrated strategy for this year`s workshop in the city of Sitges together with pilot projects proposal for the city. You can find the work and the full report titled "A Heatwave Resilience Roadmap for the City of Sitges"on our webpage in the section learnings.

Students have submitted in these last days this year`s report! Thesis commitee, this year composed by, new academic menthor Cynthia Echave, Enzo Falco from University of Trento (UNITN), and our Director Lorenzo Chelleri have assisted their presentation and reviewing now the work.
This year here at Architecture UIC, the task was different from the previous years. Moving on from analyzing cities under the frameworks of the 100 city resilient cities the aim instead was to provide an overview and critical discussion on specific “tools” part of the European Project UP2030. In the framework of H2020 RESCCUE project (www.resccue.eu) a prioritization methodology and tool were developed to assist decision makers to select the most efficient measures in terms of both their costs and the degree of risk reduction that they can guarantee.
The objective of this tools are to support decision makers to select the most efficient
measures to adapt cities to flooding, storm surges, combined sewer overflows, drought or heatwaves episodes; to combine technical and economic im pact assessment when selecting the most efficient climate change adaptation strategies; to extend current database and tool with mitigation measures.
The best reports will be published on our website and will be for you available to take a look at. Stay tuned!
