My first marine biology job was in 2006 on Curieusse Island, Seychelles. I lived on the island for 9 months working for the National Marine Park. I was working with volunteers and NGO’s showing them how to tag female turtles arriving at the beach for nesting. I tagged them and took biometrics. Later on I did patrol the beach to monitor the nests ready to hatch! Also we did reef patrolling to also tag and register juveniles and males that do not visit beaches for nesting so we had to swim for them. Amazing first marine biology job 15 years ago! We do not stop looking for sharks in the horizon!
The season with MakoPako -Basque Shark Diving- was more than amazing and now we are heading to Baja California Sur to continue our shark monitoring program with Cabo Shark Dive.

SHARK TOURISM AND SCIENCE
➡️A line with a fish head as bait can be very useful to get sharks near the side of the boat to estimate their length. With MakoPako -Basque Shark Diving- we usually see juvenile blue sharks which are easier to manage with the bait line to get them close to the hull. In Baja California, with Cabo Shark Dive, blue sharks can reach 3 meters making more difficult this size estimation near the boat.

⛔️🦈Shark fishing ban starts in Mexico today!

Hoy, 1 de mayo, comienza la veda a la pesca de tiburón en las costas mexicanas. Esta medida fue establecida por el gobierno de México para proteger las temporadas reproductivas de algunas de las especies de tiburón mas pescadas en el país. La veda en el Pacífico y Golfo de California va desde el día de hoy hasta el 31 de julio, e incluye tanto a tiburones como rayas. Por otro lado, en Tamaulipas, Veracruz y Quintana Roo, ésta comienza hoy y terminará el 30 de junio, mientras que en Tabasco, Campeche y Yucatán, la veda se divide en dos periodos: del 15 de mayo al 15 de junio y del 1 al 29 de agosto. En el litoral del Golfo de México y Mar Caribe, la veda no incluye la pesca de rayas.



Today, May 1st, the seasonal prohibition to shark fishing starts in Mexican waters. This measure was established by the Mexican government to protect the reproductive seasons of some of the most fished species of sharks in our country. The prohibition in the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of California will last until July 31st, and it includes both shark fisheries as well as ray fisheries. On the other hand, the prohibition in Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Quintana Roo will last until June 30th, while in Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán, the prohibition is divided in two periods: from May 15th until June 15th, and from August 1st til the 29th. The prohibition in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea does not include ray fisheries.
