👀Meet Helen Torres, teacher of this block’s Critical theory class “Multispecies Feminism” at Metàfora.

A social scientist working primarily within the art field, her practice explores the intersections between language, arts, and politics through feminist and decolonial perspectives.

Helen facilitates workshops on speculative fabulation and leads seminars on the work of Donna Haraway, whose writings she has extensively translated, including When Species Meet.

She teaches critical thinking, q***r theory, and feminist theories, bringing a deeply research-driven and interdisciplinary approach to her work. Currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Art History at the University of Barcelona, her dissertation focuses on art practices engaging with fungi and mycelium.

At Metàfora, she invites students to think across species, disciplines, and imaginaries, opening up space for critical reflection and new ways of relating to the more-than-human world.

This summer, make Barcelona your studio ☀️🎨

The Summer Block at Metàfora is a flexible short-term program designed for artists who want to keep creating, learning, and experimenting throughout the summer months.

With classes seven days a week, open studios until 23:00, and access to our outdoor patios and working spaces, students can fully immerse themselves in art production while experiencing Barcelona’s creative scene alongside a community of international artists and tutors.

A summer of sun, process, experimentation, and artistic growth.

Learning by building 🔨🌲
Lately, our Block 5 students have been working with Oriol Teixidor in a hands-on course focused on wood construction and carpentry techniques.
From reading plans and learning how to safely use tools, to measuring, cutting, assembling, and building their own wooden structures, students have been exploring the relationship between design, material, balance, and functionality through practice.

Last Monday our students stepped into the world of analog filmmaking during a hands-on Super8/16mm film workshop led by at her studio in Badalona.

Exploring the moving image through a tactile and experimental approach, students worked directly with celluloid, embracing its fragility, materiality, and luminous qualities. The session opened space for playful intervention, radical gestures in experimental cinema, and alternative ways of seeing and creating images in motion.

A beautiful reminder that film is not just something we watch, but something we can touch, transform, and reimagine. 🎞️

"Meet Mercedes Mangrané, artist and teacher of this block's ""Abstract Painintg"" Class at Metàfora.

Based in Barcelona, her practice unfolds through a sensitive exploration of material, perception, and spatial relationships — creating works that navigate between presence and disappearance.

Mercedes has developed her work through key residencies such as Hangar (Barcelona) and Villa Glovettes (France), and has presented solo exhibitions in institutions and galleries including Lombardi–Kargl and Georg Kargl Fine Arts in Vienna, as well as Ana Mas Projects in Barcelona and Patio Herreriano Museum in Valladolid.

Her work has also been featured in international group exhibitions and art fairs across Europe, including Paris Internationale, Miart Milan, and Artissima Torino.

At Metàfora, she brings this research-driven and experimental approach into the classroom — encouraging students to engage deeply with process, materiality, and the subtle tensions that shape contemporary artistic practice.
