The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) is a center for research, education, production and outreach, with the mission of imagining the future habitat of our society and building it in the present. IAAC follows the digital revolution at all scales to expand the boundaries of architecture and design and meet the challenges faced by humanity. IAAC is an experimental and experient

ial center where one learns by doing, through a test methodology that promotes real solutions. IAAC is open, independent and radical; inspired by the values of Barcelona, the capital of architecture and design. The institute offers the following programs:

Two years after the programme, Andrei runs his own practice.

On 3 July, IAAC celebrated its Graduation Ceremony 2026 at L’Hivernacle – honouring more than 200 students from over 70 countries who have spent the past year making, prototyping and pushing the boundaries of architecture, design and urbanism.

Powerful speeches, shared emotions and the energy of a generation ready to build what comes next.

Forest Shepherd – Mobile Exhibition Prototype. 🌿

Students of IAAC’s Master in Ecological Architecture & Advanced Construction 2025–26 present their final project: a mobile exhibition structure built with recycled timber from the MWC 2026 pavilion and sheep wool, designed to house the IAAC 25th anniversary exhibition and the winners and finalists of the 11th Advanced Architecture Contest 2026.

A prototype that embodies what the programme stands for: building with what exists, designing for what comes next.

AI for ALL: Architecture & the Built Environment is an exhibition that sets out to demystify artificial intelligence and bring it within reach of everyone.

Developed by students of IAAC’s Master in AI for Architecture and Business Innovation, in collaboration with the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and presented as part of Barcelona 2026, World Capital of Architecture – six interactive installations that translate generative systems, data-driven environments and algorithmic logic into spatial, hands-on experiences anyone can touch, navigate and question.

Meet the first Bosch Aymerich International Scholarship recipients. 🚀

Amanda Luisa Koivisto Nevado and Álvaro Mieres de Santiago have been selected as the first two scholars of this first-of-its-kind fully funded research scholarship connecting Spanish graduates with MIT faculty.

This September, they head to Boston to develop advanced research at MIT – fully funded. In March 2027, they return to Barcelona to continue their work at IAAC.

Two scholars. Two research lines. One mission: to push the boundaries of architecture and the built environment.

Congratulations, Amanda and Álvaro. The future starts now. 🌍

IAAC’s Exhibition 2025/26 – Architects of Change. Prototyping the Future – took over the IAAC Atelier Building, showcasing the experimental prototypes developed by students across all of IAAC’s master’s programmes.

Two floors of work that rethinks architecture, technology, urbanism, design and ecology – from bio-based materials and robotic construction to AI-powered design, regenerative buildings and data-driven cities.

The opening was also the moment to celebrate the IAAC Academic Awards Ceremony, recognising the most outstanding work of the 2025–26 academic year.

Each programme has its own vision. Together, they form something bigger: a generation of architects who don’t wait for the future – they build it.

MDEFest 2026 brought together students from the Master in Design for Emergent Futures for a one-day festival of possible futures.

Under the theme Myths Of Tomorrow: Unfolding New Beliefs, first and second year students opened their projects, installations and live activations to the public – using design to question the present and bring speculative worlds to life.

Final presentations from the Robotics for Ecological Buildings studio at IAAC 🤖

Students from the Master in Advanced Architecture, specialising in robotics and advanced construction, spent the semester developing robotic fabrication workflows to work with what most construction processes avoid – irregular timber, natural stone and reclaimed materials with non-standard properties.

Using IAAC’s future campus warehouse as both context and constraint, each project proposed custom, low-impact interventions for an existing industrial shell.

The challenge was not just technical: it was about programming robots to adapt to the unpredictability of natural matter and the reality of pre-existing architectural conditions.

The prototypes are the result of that process.

What if the best building material was the one you were about to throw away?

That is exactly what students from the Master in Advanced Architecture explored in the Digital Matter Studio – six projects that investigate banana fibre, biochar, cork, reclaimed concrete and earth as the building blocks of a more honest, circular architecture.

The studio sits at the intersection of urban mining, embodied carbon analysis and advanced digital workflows. The results are technically rigorous, visually striking and deeply uncomfortable with the status quo.

🪵 Timber that was going to be burnt. Concrete rethought from scratch. Vernacular systems rebuilt for the 21st century.

The Advanced Manufacturing thesis cluster started from a simple but radical premise: that how we build matters as much as what we build.

Students from the Master in Advanced Architecture – specialising in robotics and advanced construction – spent months testing that idea through robotic fabrication, digital workflows and material systems that push construction beyond its current limits.
