Want to attend your first Toastmaster's meeting?

⬇ Here's what to expect! ⬇

Bur first, rest assured you won't have to give a speech if you don't want to.

We're aware that attending a Toastmasters meeting for the first time can be intimidating, especially if you don't know what to expect.

So here's a quick breakdown of how we structure our meetings at Sagrada Familia Toastmasters:

1. The Club President opens the meeting and asks new attendees to briefly introduce themselves.

2. Then, the Toastmaster of the Day takes over after the Club President, guiding the agenda, introducing speakers, and ensuring the meeting flows smoothly.

3. Now we get to the juicy part, where several club members will deliver prepared speeches on various topics.

4. One week we'll be speaking in English and the next in Spanish, so this club is perfect for you if you want to improve your presentations in both languages.

5. Every speech is evaluated with constructive feedback, focusing on strengths, areas of improvement, and adherence to time limits.

6. Following that, we will dedicate a few minutes to "Table Topics", which is a session to practice an impromptu 2-minute speech.

7. And after the session is officially over, we go to a nearby bar to chat and get to know one another 🍻

And there you have it!

Now you know what to expect when you attend one of our sessions.

Our next scheduled meeting will be on September 4th at 7:30 PM in Gràcia.

We'd love to have you!

Please welcome Krisztina our brand new Sergeant at Arms! 👏

As Sergeant at Arms, Krisztina will be responsible for making each meeting meeting shine 😊

She'll set up the room and the online meetings, and make sure there are always plenty of supplies on hand.

But that's not all!

Krisztina will also be opening and closing each Toastmaster's session.

And throughout, she'll be attentive to our guests and make sure everything runs smoothly 😎.

We asked Krisztina to share a little bit about what brought her to Toastmasters and here's what she shared:

"I joined to this great community a year ago. My goal was to improve my persuasive speaking. I wanted to improve my communication skills and express myself succinctly and build a strong focus and communicate a strong message to my audience.

I stayed because this community gave me an inspiring environment where I can improve my skills. It also gives me the opportunity to meet with people who are actively working on their self-development. And because we present both in Spanish and English, I can improve my Spanish."

We're excited to have you onboard Krisztina and are looking forward to you opening our next session!

It’s not often you’re left speechless at a Toastmasters club meeting 👀.

But that’s exactly what happened when Albert took the stage at our last gathering.

Albert had us with our jaws on the floor.

You see, Toastmasters isn’t just about giving a rehearsed speech.

In every meeting we open the floor for “Table Topics” - where anyone can practise a short, improvised speech.

And that’s where Albert took the stage.

He had us wrapped around his little finger as he shared a personal story about the challenges and delights of exploring new restaurants when you’ve got celiac’s disease.

His oratory skills are incredible!

Intrigued, we asked him to share a bit more about his interest in public speaking.

Here’s what he shared with us:

“I have been interested in public speaking for a long time.

Back in year 8 I joined my school’s debate team. We participated in many debate leagues which increased my passion for speaking in public: knowing what you want to say, convey your message, and blast the public with it.

But earlier this year I became part of 4 voices, a public speaking competition.

Everything was really different there: instead of defending an argument, you had to express something personal or unique to you, which really changed my idea of what public speaking is.

I also met some really amazing people at my internship at BCN Metropolitan.

Knowing about my interest in public speaking, they told me about Toastmasters and how the aim of the organisation is to help you master the art of public speaking by offering feedback in a positive environment.

That REALLY caught my attention!

My motivation and interest in Toastmasters is to cultivate my passion for public speaking, and gradually mastering this art!

I love the feeling of having to think on the spot, but I’m fearful nothing may come out under pressure.

That’s something I feel can be polished at Toastmasters.

I believe that as humans we were given a voice. We must use it, and practice so we can give our best when speaking in public!”

In our last meeting of the season, Alba Lucia Hincapié shared 6 easy formulas to improvise a speech 👍

Improvising a speech is an essential skill for anyone to have .

Wether it's at work or in a social gathering, our words matter.

Knowing how to contribute to a conversation helps us build rapport with our peers.

It also builds our confidence as speakers as we can practice (for free!) in pretty much any setting.

✅ By keeping just one of these 6 frameworks in your pocket will help you stand out in any social situation.

Which one will you try next? (My personal favourite is number 6 😉)

1️⃣ Opinion - share your opinion on the subject matter
2️⃣ Cause and effect - reflect on the cause and effects related to the subject matter
3️⃣ Past present future - similar to the above except now you add your future prediction or desired outcome
4️⃣ Negative and positive - contrast a negative and positive outcome about the subject matter
5️⃣ Good, better, great - 3 fantastic outcomes related to your subject matter
6️⃣ Bridging - Not comfortable sharing your opinion? Change the topic of conversation by creating a link to what you'd rather talk about. This move is ace.
